I would like to beg the forum's indulgence for a few moments for a topic that will come around to feature, but just not immediately.

Looking across Starfleet Command, Aramada, and Bridge Commander, there are a lot of takes on what a captain does. Obviously, the original material provides the richest source.

Without (yet) going into specific implementation details, what are the discrete things a captain orders in running a ship? As many of the games involve micro-management that I think would be left to lower officers, the goal would not be to generate every subtle nuance, but the core, logical activities.

Here are some:
Chose destination, or at least route to get to destination
Hail vs. Attack ship
Target specific ship in enemy armada
Alert status. Green, yellow, red alert
Order ship to self-destruct/evacuate ship.
Repair priorites
Run away
Target specific systems
Send away team
Attack patterns

That would be awesome!! I hope it works with the a2 engine.

I agree that this sounds like a great idea, but I like General Helev am left to wonder if the notoriously bad ai scripting can handle so much nit picky stuff that all falls under combat behavior, or most of it atleast, and the fact of the matter is this is an area that unfortanatly has been locked in.

If u've read the ai section, as I am sure many of you have, there isn't much to it other than proximity charts and build diagrams for the computer leaving combat behavior somewhere it can't be changed

I do like this idea, if possible, I hope it's implemented.

A few other captain's orders:

Call for help.
Respond to someone else's call for help.

Corection:
Distress Call
Respond to Distress Call

Still they are both good ideas!

Itz would be very cool! It would make it even more realistic than it is now!
I hope the AI can handle those extra oders!

As I mentioned in the other thread, it would require handling the fog of war differently. Specifically, you as admiral/grand commander might not always know where all of your ships were, especially when they are in deep enemy territory. Better AI would have to handle your ships not in direct contact.

On the other hand, it would be cool once those recon ships came back in range to download everything they saw. At the same time, the challenge for a player is to destroy a rec ship before it can transfer the data back home.
