the borg had mostly adapted to federation weaponry by bobw.
the first time the enterprise fired on the cube, it did the sort of damage you'd expect on an unshielded target, lots of it. then they adapted, by bobw the cube wasn't getting damaged at all. by first contact, it still fought its way to earth, destroyed the fleet's flagship and easily shrugged off the remains of the fleet. it was only picard's deux ex machina that saved them.
