So I had an idea to make Probes, Scubes, and Adaptors a little more viable as mid-late game units.
A research in the Transmission Matrix that would give all three of those vessels a very weak and non-combat version of the Sphere's Regen ability. By Non-Combat I mean that it is an ability either unusable if the ship is under attack (if that's codable), or that it restores merely 15-30% of the total hull value for a full use so it wouldn't be able to suck up the damage the way that a Sphere can do. Essentially it's something that, if you do the research, you can heal up a retreated Probe with something sort of approaching the ability of a normal ship to hit up a repair yard.
I think this could very easily be scaled appropriately for each Chassis and an ability grafted on to each one based on how much special energy each one possess'.
A Probe, being the easiest to focus-fire down by the time you've got a Transmission Matrix, could use it's full energy complement to restore 25% of it's hull. I say 25% because Probes even massed are really not much of a threat late game.
A Scube, being still very useful as raiders (and a regen ability could make for nightmarish scenarios), could have it's regen ability scaled according to which module is equipped. Int. Scubes would have the least amount of special energy available as their System value is lowest, while the Regen and EM scubes would have the highest. I feel that an Intercept Scube should not be able to Regen more than 15% of it's total value (just an estimation
) per use.
An Adaptor already regens pretty decently since they always (without mixed-tech) have a regen module. A 10% max hull regen per use I think would be a safe starting point.
Again, let me be clear:
This would have to be scaled to ensure that it is not something viable for combat-situations.
Part of me says: Make the weapons systems go offline while the effect is happening. I.E you are trading your weapon system energy for increased regen rate once the research is complete. This means that, for the most part, the regen ability will not be used in combat the way the Super-Sphere Regen is.
To those saying, "But hey! This will make Borg SOOOOOOO OP in the beginning of the game because they'll never have to go home to repair!" You're wrong. Dead wrong. Transmission Matrix' don't make it into the game until mid-game at the earliest as they are quite expensive. These units are usually no longer in play as the Matrix is most often put up for Nanites (Diamond / Cube). This is something that, once those smaller units are already less attractive, puts a little but of fire in their pants.

i like it, maybe reduce the % values a little more. i like the idea of weapons going off to do it. maybe movement speed reduced and sensors off. when TNG cube regenned it didnt do anything at all.
