Borg Ranking System - Adaptation

What about funneling whatever points gained from weapons fire as requirements for research?
i.e. x number of pulse hits on borg ships enable the pulse adaption research from the research station.

something like that i had in mind for the transmission matrix. High Energy slicer is available as soon as there is a certain level of adaption reached, it wouldn't neccessarily have to be researched then, but thats more of a balancing question.
What you propose sounds more like you gain points similar to a resource and spend them on different damage-reduction techs. An amount of adaption will be taken from your adaption Level and you will have to save more adaption to conduct another research.
Maybe one can mix that. It would be enough if such adaption levels, in case they are not only ship-dependant, could be seen in a research station somehow. (Tooltips aren't dynamcially changing ingame, are they?) Maybe some research could require Collective Connections as an (additional) resource to stop players from getting to much of that tech at once.

for the earlier comment after mine:
it doesn't make sense to give individual borg ships a rank system. they're a collective. why give them ranked ships up to veteran? why do they need five ranks at all? we could change it first to collective adaptations. no ranks. and they can only adapt collectively say three times. the first collective adaptation allows countering against (choose what). the second allows ... etc. it could be something like the three adaptations allow for increased resistance against beam, pulse, and torp. or we could give them four collective adaptations, the fourth being for against specials. or instead, back to the three. it could be against small, medium, and large ships, the first collective adaptation gives a 20% reduced damage, and we can give it any resource cost, as well as being based on weapons fire received.
the possibilities are pretty much endless
the above suggestion also works.
we just set it so that the borg can adapt - and I think it could be something like being researched at a station, i suggested an icon of sorts for it earlier yandonman also offered a way of doing this, or we just set it to work off of a point system stand alone - but we can always hamper this so that a universal borg adaptations dont cause to much trouble for other races.
we can give the other races opportunities to counter this with "sir, the borg seem to be adapting to our weapons, given enough time they may become useless. } "understood signal starfleet, get them working on it.
then presto we do some research thing a ma jig and new weapons are created for countering borg adapting process.
other races have a ranking system.. which doesnt transfer nicely to borg. but i like it being based on shots fired against ships. and a universal counter for when the borg adapt. anything else wouldnt be borg. i realize it seems op, but we have some pretty creative devs who im sure can balance it out if they like the idea.

Could just make it very simple, like as your units take damage a special ability charges on the side of your screen, when fully charged the power unlocks for an Xsec adaption bubble for all ships in a small area. Finished
