I've been thinking and i noticed that borg ships seem to be increasing sizes of the same with minor differences. Thus, i propose:
* Probe:
* Primary Directive: locate species for assimilation
* modules: N/A
* Scoutcube:
* Primary Directive: asses threat of newly located species
* modules: beam, torpedo, interception
* Adaptor:
* Primary directive: adapt to species attempts at resistance
* modules: beam, torpedo, adaption (adds a passive ability that reduces damage taken a small amount from a given weapon for each shot absorbed)
* Assimilator:
* Primary Directive: assimilate new drones for the collective
* modules: beam, torpedo, assimilation
* Sphere:
* Primary Directive: eliminate threats to the collective
* modules: beam, torpedo, regeneration
* Cube:
* Primary Directive: assimilate technological components into the collective
* modules: beam, torpedo, holding beam, armor (to upgrade to armored cube)
* Armored Cube:
* Primary Directive: destroy resistive species
* Modules: beam, torpedo, holding beam, armor (to upgrade armor strength)
* Diamond:
* Primary Directive: protect the Queen
* modules: beam, torpedo, energy shielding (to add a shield to it)

Using the 'directives' approach, it seems to me that the Adaptor's role might actually be more along the line of 'analyze technology of species which resist'.
Following that idea, and I don't know if this is possible, but give it a module that is like the old tech-assimilator, except you then take the captured tech to an Assembler, which can then build a vessel that can have Adaptation modules but normally couldn't. As a special Perk, this Adaptation module doesn't require a mixed-tech yard, but you can only have 1 if you don't have the Yard. So if you had the yard, you could make a cube with 2 Fed modules after ripping parts out of a sovvie...but if you don't have the yard, you can only have 1 fed module.

Could work but you would have to be careful
The thought of a Cube running round with Plasma coil, Shield reset from a Descent is pretty horrendus...
Or any number of other wierd situations were two races are having tech mixed together on one ship.... A Borg ship with 2 different race's tech on it... That's pretty evil really.

I don't want it to actually give the special weapons. I just want it to be able to give the normal adaptation modules to ships other than the distinctly unused Adaptor.

Yep. I would like to see the modules used on other ships, but only 1 module for the others. Which would give it 20-25% damage reduction from that particular race.
