(not sure of the balance implications, but throwing this out there)

Feature request: Allow borg to build some of their buildings connected to each other. The buildings are still separate entities.

Assimilation Matrix (Starbase) would remain separate.
Incubation Centers could be built connected to other Incubation Centers.
The Conduction Matrix, Transmission Matrix and Recycling Center could be built connected.

Buildings still need to be built by the constructor. Any 'red-you-can't-build-here' grids would show green (or other non-red color) to indicate the ability to build their. (or just remove the red ones, with the gap in the red grids indicating where they station can be built.)

Would certainly make the Borg more unique structure-wise. I don't like the current thing with the buildings just a lot larger than other races and with ridiculous space requirements.

I think that actually the assimilation matrix should be connectable, but only to Incubation centers (remember that those are specifically made so assimilated babies can grow up to be Drones) and the Conduction Matrix.
I agree with the rest of your idea.
I would also like the mining platforms (forget the name) to connect to nearby structures in range, including Dode turrets .

I'm sure the devs already came to a desicion about connected stations... can't remember it right now, but it should be somewhere in feature requests.

I believe it was something like: looks nice but is unhandy for gameplay and difficult to implement, thus NO

I believe the current plan is to make girders so they are pseudo connected.
