I would like the mini-map to indicate where a battle is occurring (this option would ideally be toggle able).
The indicator could be an icon. Ideally, the icon would distinguish between me attacking only and me getting attacked (i.e. me getting attacked = red icon, me attacking = yellow icon). In a FFA, it would show other people's battle that don't include me (i.e a green icon?).
Additionally, I would like the icon to indicate how many ships are involved. This could be done by the size of the icon, where the smallest icon might represent a battle between 2-6 ships, a medium sized icon might represent 7-16 ships, and a large icon might represent a battle between more than 16 ships.
And if it is feasible, it would be nice if the icon gave some sort of indication of the balance of power of the fleets involved. I.e. if the total offensive power of my ships is less than that of the opposing fleet, then the icon would be different than if the total offensive power of my ships were greater.
I can see this being a useful additional indication when
a) someone kills your just uncloaked scout
b) multiple attacks are occurring - i.e. on your front door and on your mining
(inspired by the mech suit's HUD in District 9)

Nice idea indeed
. Usually games have that with a spacebar button to indicate last major operation too. A blinking circle or something on the minimap where you were last attacked would be quite nice, though I imagine it'd be hard to differentiate between small and big battles with your icon idea (especially on such a small minimap).
If I may add... I'd like some sort of method to indicate to my allies/opponents where something is. Similar to Warcraft where you can plop an icon down that appears to allies on the minimap as a blinking thingie, and on the normal map of course. Would be real useful when it is difficult to type quickly in a battle or to indicate where "lost ships are".
EDIT: typo

That would be what most games call 'Flares'. Would be nice to see these sorts of things, but if I remember right, there is no Minimap anymore

Hehe, there definitely will be a minimap - you mean there is no cinematic window
