the essence of time, youth and technology, no one has any time for the old stuff anymore and want to do everything on the fly.
if someone cant be bothered to play a game, then they shouldn't be bothered to open the game window to realize they shouldn't be bothered to respond that they automatically got kicked out after 30 seconds in the lobby. A1 used have that system and IMO it's still the best option. i haven't played multiplayer games because i am not sure about my connection speed with these dreadfully designed wireness network connections. as for avatars, i suggest you just open up a game against an easy AI and just look at the options they you have or go on boggz site even though that site is only half completed.
i choose Adimral Dimitry Valtaine (Mayson) everytime because of the support capabilities and because the torp turrets are OP compared to Admiral Jadzia Dax (risner)'s torpedo stations besides that, Risner's ships take too longer too build and so a waste of time as well as the other trivial things.

Well, why not make a library option (only for avatars) selectable from the main menu of the game ?
The library should have a layout similar to Dominus Noctis's guide with the same kind of informations displayed before selecting them at the start of a multiplayer / instant game.
An option called: "Avatars and factions", maybe could be placed near the "Credits" selectable option ?
So before people venture into online gameplay against humans and AI's, if they are curious and interested enough in what the games has to offer, they will click that option.
They could take some minutes after installing the game to go and select in the main menu the option called "Avatars and factions", and look over the avatars along side with their description.
This should be done in a summary kinda of way, so no extra work should be required by the developers of Fleet Operations (I think
)).
Well, these are just examples ... the names I showed can be changed. Just thinking of a way to avoid the need to read avatars before online or instant action game starts ... as you can read them before you start the game, in the library section of the main menu. The idea could be modified as you guys saw fit, dosen't have to be exactly as I stated it.
Hope this helps.

each fed avatar only has one torpedo station, one pulse station and the phaser station. in general i think the idea is that mayson's type XV phaser/quantum pulse/torp stations are better than risners standard phaser/pulse/photon stations. but right now risner's photon turret is actually the only one that is OP. it does more damage than mayson's per second easily. and it fires in "bursts" of 1, meaning it deals that damage much faster. also mayson's quantum launcher splits torps between several targets, risner's can only hit one. her single photon has more power than several quantums lol. if you can get to late game risner's late game units kick arse. the phalanx and avalon are good ships just you dont see them often.

How about a 5 second time limit, and if you don't choose it chooses the left one, or make an option in the settings for avatar preferences, and then you can set them for each race before you start a game, which it will choose if you don't make the time limit.
Dave's idea is also AWESOME. Maybe that could be where your preferences could be set too.
Bearing mind all of this will become more useful when more avatars are released.
