Okay, i would like to spend more time on this but heres the basic idea.
So either you could create your own, using a simple creator that the devs make or there would be preset attack and defense patterns.
So basically what these patterns would do, is make ships in the fleet do different things, it would effect evasion rate, hit percentage, damage, all of that stuff.
So for instance, you say attack pattern alpha, this tells all the ships to target on a single ship at a specific spot, this deals more damage to the ship under fire, however your ships move slower, so there easier to hit.
and then maybe attack pattern alpha 2, it doesnt focus on one ship but its still very accurate and critical targeting
and then maybye defense pattern gama, larger ships with bigger sheilds try to sheild smaller ships from hits, or maybye you target one ship or one station, so that you sheild it from hits, now all this would do is have the ship that you want sheilded take like 70-80 percent less damage or somthing, and the ship protecting more damage, this could also be integrated into the guard function, and you would see your ships zoom around the other ship to protect it,
so this is the basic idea, id like to elaborate but i dont have alot of time, please excuse spelling, thanks

That sounds like a hell of a lot of work.. those are game engine changes, not even coding issues at this stage afaik.
You should go ahead and do it, I suspect it will take months of work to implement something like this.

There's another recent thread almost exactly like this out right now.
Making formations is extremely difficult coding-wise for starters, and it's been established that really it wouldn't benefit ships much anyway as the game does not utilize a difference in shields based on fore/aft/ventral/etc ....

As I understand him right he is not just talking about formations. He's talking about a customizable attack pattern feature. Every player could create his/her own attack patterns having e.g. three slots available that would contain the respective self made attack scheme. Select your fleet, press the attack pattern and as soon as you order them to attack a ship you watch the show while micromanage here and there a bit.
This sounds absolutly outstanding and would be a full feature, hard to accomplish as you had to script it from scratch. WOW if Doca would come up with something like that... This would add a complete new dimension into gameplay no other commercial game had before...

This to me sound like your trying to catchup or get ahead of STO. But the idea itself would make a whole new division of strategy. I was thinking that this can be implemented in the avatar choice. You drag and drop symbols representing your attack patterns, you select 3 and then your avatar. Thereby creating a whole new set of possibilities. I myself would like to design some neat attack patterns, But the issue stands where there are ships faster than others, how would we keep them synchronized? And what about paths for specific chassis? I would like to have some paths specific to long range, others to mediums, some to heavy ships while others to destroyers and scouts.

I just want some proper formations back.
Buut... Attack patterns in STO were just buffs to your ship or the enemy's, these would have to include manouver's right?

As far as I remember, there was the option to give ships a flying route to patrol. Could this peace of code be used?

actually i seriosly love the idea.
But sadly we all know thats gonna be a hell of work

Woof. Sounds really complicated - not so sure how it would work, but could be interesting if a lot of different mechanics were changed as well (normally one doesn't think of being able to hid behind stuff in space of course
)
