Asteroid fields

Is it possible to have asteroid fields cause damage to vessels passing through? Of course how much damage depends on vessel size, level and density of the field.

Is it possible to make it so that Asteroids cause damage to specific types of ship? I'm thinking that heavy asteroid fields could be impassable as they are now but light fields could cause damage to heavy ships while smaller, nimbler ships can pass through with no issue...

While on the topic of asteroids. I have always thought it would be very cool if certain asteroids or asteroid belts could be destroyed. Sort of like destructable terrain or at least deformable. Something like this would offer a strategic possibility and add spice to map making and exploration by allowing you to blast your way through certain areas but not others. Maybe create a secret way into an enemy's base...?  :rolleyes:

Just a thought.

Aye a Map Object station in the shape of an Asteroid should work. That's a good idea.

So how would you alter the asteroid ODFs to make them cause varied damage to a range of vessels?

How do you make asteroids destructible?

Destructability is simply making it classify as a station. Varied damage would be an area effect weapon that has a damage variable.

Okay I'm going to need a blow by blow. Well might be easier for the Flops team to do it in the next release.

I wonder if it is possible for when a large asteroid is destroyed to have several smaller ones appear?

I think the eventual plan is to indeed have destructible asteroids, as well as mineable debris (short lived - not infinite). Who knows, it might come with the 'map events' that will start arriving soon :)

Well, that reminds me of Eve, as well as being one of the most common stuff on Star Trek series.

Actually, I doubt that the feature of the small Asteroids in the fields should be implemented since most species have Deflector shields that prevent damage from such small fragments.

The Borg, on the other hand, have no shields but their ships are too big (ingame) to take noticeable damage from that size of asteroids.

However, larger asteroids (say half the size of the current Small Asteroid) will cause damage, but I think that to make the game cooler that feature shouldn't be implemented until it will actually affect the ships physical appearance and not just stats.

Smaller asteroids from destroyed ones already exist, the wreckage that comes of blowing things up using the asteroid SOD.

If you leave out the Asteroids of Doom because they effect stats but not the appearance, you may as well leave out weapons because they too don't effect the appearance.
