Hey,
I really enjoyed Fleet Operations, its been great fun.
But I was wondering where the game is heading? And I have a suggestion. I like the big battles, the unlimited ships that anyone can throw at another player.
My suggestion is simply to expand to the next level on a strategy level. By playing the faction on a higher level. Like building colonies, develop the colonies, diplomacy: deal with 'minor races', deal with major factions, research and development, trade, run the government of the faction by picking characters to run all kinds of posts/positions. Similar to Birth of the federation (in concept), Masters of Orion, and even Rome Total war (through the use of characters and character traits that could be both good, productive and even counter-productive). And the battle interface used in Fleet Operations, would be neat to play out military engagements.
If this sounds like a neat idea worth exploring, I'd say first start out small, with 5 playable factions. Like the Federation, Romulans, Cardassians, Klingons and the Ferengi. As time goes on add other factions like the Breen, Dominion, the Borg and many others!

4x is fun, but RTSs have their place.
I liked Star Wars: Empire at War for being both (it had a "skirmish" mode for normal RTS), but it wasn't more than just good (if you can overlook the horrible balancing issues) at either.
I think maybe one day in a decade FO might have a 4x component, but let's get the RTS bit all figured out first.

I hope that whenever the Campaign is implemented that is done in kind of a 4x style. If you have ever played battle for middle earth thats what i hope for.

I understand the need to iron out the bugs in any mod. Sometimes it feels like thats all the game has or any game has. Like Birth of the Federation, after awhile the game really slows down, regards how fast your computer is. The only advantage BOTF has over Star wars Empire at war is the ability to play more then 2-3 factions.
I really enjoyed the first Battle for Middle Earth. The second one I didn't like because you couldn't build fortresses that you could put troops on the walls.
But I really hope the programmers look into at least in theory at developing the game in this direction. I for one have been hoping for a more developed/revamp Birth of the Federation for a very long time.

By the way if you like that sort of gameplay I do as well then check this out:
Star Trek: Sacrifice of Angels 2 mod for Sins of a Solar Empire - Mod DB
It's exactly what you're looking for the quality of the ships is as good as from FO.
The gameplay sounds and music tracks are also very recommendable.
Have fun.

Supremacy looks good, and hopeful. I was hoping for a little more 'real' time rather then turn based. Its still in development so who knows. A real time version of birth of the federation is what I'd like to see. With ideas taken from other RTS's like Star Wars Empire at War, Rebellion, Master's of Orion (well some ideas from this game even thou it was turn based).
And Sacrifice of Angels 2, it comes close but its kinda building off some kind of storyline. I like a little more free-reign style, in which the player could even possibly pick the time line in which they can start the game. Like in the original Medieval Total War game, you can start in the 'early' middle ages, middle and late.

So, I was wondering if this was something the admins and other players would like to see some kind of development. Or at least start working in this direction to make a RTS game. Kinda based on the ideas that were discussed or mentioned in this topic. And I'd like to see what others think of this as well, add their input to this discussion.

That would be cool on an online game. people can expand and conquer much like dark orbit where all you get is the top view for faster game axceleration.

O I agree Utopia, it would be a neat game. I just hope they are listening and hopefully are forming some kind of plan.

Well the 4x style is not something the devs have expressed interest in doing so its not likely to happen.

Dircome,
Well I hope its something they really consider doing. I for one would think it would be a great game, since they put a great deal of effort in fleet Operations, I just hope it leads some where. And I think developing Fleet Operations into a RTS game would be a good direction to expand into.
Plus I'd donate more if that is the direction they are willing to go. Otherwise I may have to look else where, but I seriously think these guys really have something here that could be expanded on.

fleetops already is rts already
the boundaries between 4x and rts are getting thinner. it used to be all 4x games were turn based, now some 4x games are real time and are being called rts.
