A Different Approach to Mixed-Tech

Post ideas and suggestions on new features or improvements here.

I've thought up a new system for mixed-tech. Instead of having one research item simply unlock a bunch of ships, how about the mixed-tech yard is instead a mixed-tech research station. Once its built:

1. The improvements to "normal" ships would automatically be applied to those built in the yards (or perhaps researched). Obviously, some of the bonuses would have to be less powerful.
2. Any special ships could be researched - afterward they would be added to the normal yards.
3. Special universal, passive technologies could be researched. Ideas:
  • Federation mixed-tech could grant a small firing arc and defensive boost.
  • Klingon mixed-tech could grant a medium offensive boost at the cost of a decrease in firing range.
  • Dominion mixed-tech could grant a bonus in crew sizes and boarding strength.
  • Borg mixed-tech could grant a medium systems boost.
  • Romulan mixed-tech could grant something akin to their firing rate boost upon entering combat and/or a sensor range bonus.

I like this approach better than the one curently in use. I have often thought this very same Idea.

This coudl work. Perhaps this is what optec meant when he said changes are going to be made to mixed tech in the future!

Yeah maybe you could get prototypes for them too. Just an idea

So, the idea is:
We capture an enemy construction ship, build a mixed-tech research station and this will grant your ship additional active and passive abilities and even new ships.

Hmm... difficult, because on the actual way, you build mixed tech ships when they are superior to your vessels you now have. When the bonus is decreased, they might not be worth the whole investment and you simply save your breath in order to beat your enemy with normal ships.

Lets think about it:
I make an example for the defiant class:

When you are fed and you capture:

Romulan:
- You get a cloaking device for your defiant vessel and a slighty increased system bonus

Borg:
- your ablative armor of the defiant class is getting to a tactical armor and it will grant your ship a higher defensive value. Also, your system resistance and your repair rate is incereased
Thus you have a stronger energy reactor now, your shields are a little bit stronger

Klingon:
- The defiant will get through its pulse phasers and quantum torpedos also and additional standard phaser (weak) on the front and an additional photon torpedo in the back. This ship is now able to attack two enemies at the same time. Sure, through that your offensive value is increased

Dominion:
- The speed of this ship will increase and will get a quantum/polaron torpedo, that got the same destruction rate, but a higher reload rate

This is nice and the boni are given all togther. So you dont have to add either the cloaking defice or either the tactical armor.

Problem: The ships will get a massive power boost and we see in later games only Uber-ships fighting against each other

Maybe you can, when you capture a dominion constrcution ship even buil a federation defending-perimeter

How do we outbalance this?

Well, I would say it is NOT enough to capture a construction ship. I would change it into: Capture an enemy starbase. This is MUCH harder, you only get it, when you are already overwhelming an enemy player (so you simply take his part) and when the starbase is set up as we have it in intention to the battlestation/deep space mod really hard to capture.

This will reduce the chance, that you ever get your hands on mixed tech, BUT when you do, you get a great deal out of it.

The system now is: You get your hands pretty fast on it and the bonus is in most cases not worthy to mention. A few points here, a few points there. It is not bad and a nice gimmik, but the real punch I wait for when I see the holy word "mixed tech" is not really given.

Damn, I want to have the Deep Space Battlestation Mod. This one could boost the stategic possabilities into a new stage. Battlestation, mixed tech defense perimeters, borg defense cordon... damn, I would like to help out but dont have the time for it. Hngh!

Capture a starbase?  The Collective is all about that.  Easy as pie to pull off, especially for the Assimilation avatar, who can deploy cheap Assimilators and use Holding Beam Pyramids to accelerate the process.  And capturing a borg station?  That's gonna take some serious effort, even for other Borg.

Who needs Assimilators to take a Starbase? A single 'optimise' Tactical Cube can take one.

Take one is not the problem... assimillating is.

Same thing.

The way I mentioned is to do it quickly.  Takes quite a while for a cube to do it, and will frequently either blow it up before completion, or it will get decommissioned.

Fully upgraded Starbase vs a 1 Tactical Cube...I got the station with little damaged. Holding beam > beat down shields and transport until energy back > Holding beam > repeat and the station is yours. Being able to keep the ships away or destroy the rest of the base first helps.

Isn't this a bit off-topic?

Hmm, well, at this time, we only have outposts and if they are fully upgradet, they should withstand a tactical cube, because the costs are much higher for this station.

BUT: I'm waiting for the upgrade on:
- Outpost
- Battlestation/Starbase
- Deep-Space-Battlestation

And when we have THIS, we have a much larger variety to use mixed tech. (Well, at least I HOPE for this to come)
