Under Gamer's suggestion, they'd see the talon decloak and have 5-15 seconds at least (depending on how long the recharge is) to destroy it before it did the ping.  That's not too different from how it works now, and it would make more sense.  In some ways it actually works better than the current system, because currently a player can moved a cloaked (basically undetectable, especially early game) scout somewhere, uncloak and upgrade it, and have the ping much faster.

After upgrading it takes the recharge amount of time to produce a ping :)

ah but they have to buy the refit on decloaking a normal talon, and its permanent.

under gamer's suggestion it could recloak and do it loads of times. a definite improvement to something that is already good.

Ok, but they could be given the same amount of time to do a ping with Gamer's system (I believe it's 10 seconds, which is why I said it would take at least 5-15 seconds).

Is it really that commonly used a strategy that being able to do it more than once per scout would be tremendously unbalancing?  I mean, being able to do that isn't even that different from the Dominion's ability to do a sensor ping with a nearby ship.  It's a tachyon ping where the enemy won't necessarily expect, but they can destroy the ship causing it if they see it before it's done.

Basically what it does is add cool downs to make it where you cannot decloak, ping, and then cloak and run. Since usually scouts are often heavily damaged if not destroyed within that large margin of time. Plus also draining strength from other systems would discourage ping-and-run tactics even more.
