Romulan Multi-Disruptor Alternative

You feel like a battlecruiser is too weak or a race too strong? Go ahead and discuss it here :)

  Hello!   :D

Now before everyone gets too upset here ... I'd just like to say that I feel this is not too far out of balance.  Perhaps not at all.  What I'd like to push for is the notion of having fewer abilities that deal direct damage to multiple targets - ESPECIALLY on easily spammable ships.

  Reason:

A Basic, Tier 1 Destroyer that is easily spammed should not have a 100% hit, multi-target weapon with long range.  (It is the only early game unit with this ability)

The most straightforward way to win a battle is: remove as much of the enemy's damage-per-second as possible as quickly as possible.  This is most easily done against the Dominion and the Klingon as they are most likely to field many small vessels early on.  The Disruptor Rhienn is geared toward EXACTLY this with the benefit of the Kaleh Maneuver and Multi-disruptor.  The first blow is decisive as such a large portion of firepower can be lost to these abilities with really no chance of avoiding it.  Excessive use of decloak doesn't prevent the damage, just let's you know where it's going to come from.

Moreover, as more Rhienn's are produced, the amount damage dealt on the opening volley only gets bigger, making a counter harder and harder after the first failed engagement.

  Suggestion:

Honestly, I think it should just be removed.  A new ability would better fit the Romulan 1st tier destroyer.  I understand that the Disruptor Refit upgrade has been moved up to the Tal Shiar Facility.  This is a good thing in my opinion.  If not removed, then the ability should be moved to a place that prevents it from being acquired too early.  This would mean the unrefit Rhienn is suddenly useful and the refit (without Multi) will still have Kaleh for a powerful opening strike.  Also, the Romulans will be forced to rely more on Stealth and conserving vessels than just:  AAAAHAHHAH" my 10 Rhienns with Multi just owned your Fleet.  Now I'll just build more until I use 4 Jamming-Griffins along with them and kill everything outright."

So let's look at why this ability sticks out compared to other aoe damage abilities in early / mid game.

  • Galaxy - [Type 2 torpedo]  Hardly spammable and comes with a drawback.
  • Sang - [Compound Torpedoes]  Requires Battle Yard / Armory.  Also may miss small targets.
  • Norway - [Plasma Coil]  Spammable but damage is spread out and can be moved away from.
  • S-8 - [IS Bomb]  Who uses it?  Hardly spammable due to cost AND the fact that it's a bomb ...

It is the ONLY AoE/Multi-Target ability on a spammable ship in the early game with level damage.  The Norway has been nuetered because of what it used to be and is still very useful!  However it no longer ends a battle with the click of a button.  Now you will get some damage out of Plasma Coil but have to fight too  ^-^.

Alternative:

I always liked the idea of the Rhienns being able to work together to bring down larger "prey" as it were.  An interesting alternative to the Multi-Target Disruptor could be a beam (Because it's the DISRUPTOR Rhienn :)) that can be fired by 1 Rhienn that does damage based on the amount of special energy it can draw from surrounding Rhienns.  Thus:

  • A group of Rhienn's can blast away a single opponent in one blast.
  • Early / Mid game a small group supporting a fleet can cripple an enemy cruiser.
  • Late game a decent group can dispatch a large vessel quickly

This is totally possible in terms of modding (I'm pretty sure), and allows the Rhienn to remain useful later in the game.  Having it drain energy from other Rhienn's nearby to do increased damage allows it to remain a powerful tool as the game goes on without obliterating enemy fleets at an exponential rate.

  There you have it.  ^-^

i totally agree with you
and your second suggestion was even once used, with the 8472 frigate that used the beams of surrounding battleships to create a uber beam.

I dont see a problem with the Multi Targetting Disruptor, as it fits the Romulan lineup. You might have missed the Serkas, which is also 'spammable' and deals constant area damage even over artillery range. However, the Rhienn refits got some rebalancing in the next patch, in order to make the unrefitted Rhienn interessting again ^-^

I guess I did miss the Serkas :).  But the Serkas have drawbacks of their own in the sense that they are immensely expensive, the weapon is "dodgeable", and the Serkas itself is slow and vulnerable.

Glad to hear that you plan on making the Multi-disruptor a later technology.  It's just seeing it lay waste to your early game destroyers along with a few Griffins using Jammer that render you completely impotent that REALLY hurt Dominion and Klingon early game (as they have the most defence-vulnerable destroyers.

I think the changes in 3.8 will help a lot with any balancing concerns.  Rhienns will be slower and more vulnerable to interceptor fire.  Plus bugs will be able to ram again! :woot:

Edit:  I just remembered that Optec said they were going to push refits back a little, so they won't be as accessible early game.  So that should belay any worries right there.

yep they are now much stronger, but a late-game technology :)

Yay!  I think that will be the perfect fix!  Thanks for the info, Optec.  ^-^
