Why the Avalon...
"while you produce out of Antares yard", which is (likely) already chassis 1, so the Risner tech up to chassis 2 with 600/300 isn't much of a problem. And you gain the ability to produce more cost efficient ships like the Akira - which again is better vs small / medium sized than the Intrepid (more dps in phaser than torps, nice tanking special, more cost efficient), while of course you may build a Remore too.
Cost of Avalon is just slightly more expensive than E2, even with the chassis 2 upgrade, you will have far superior fire power and defense value for your investment, with just slightly reduced speed, which overall will do way better vs. small unit spam.
The Avalon, in my opinion, is meant to be a complementary unit with WarpIns (or slow / mid speed fleets) around mid game, and very good vs. small / mid sized vessels.
(Don't forget the miss ratio from E2 vs small - that's a lot of firepower you waste into open space)

Why?

Ah yeah, favorites, i would totally go for the Topmey vs. non-borg. Either they mine, or i pop them and counter-raid later with them. K'Vorts are fun too, such efficient raiders, or what about the Ambassador aka "i don't care if there's a starbase" WarpIn... too many choices

I agree that Klingons have rather small crews, which gives them the worst boarding abilities :hmmm: . Concerning the Vutpas place in the tech tree I've made up a thread some patches ago to put it on the same place like the Vor'cha(unfortunately I can't find the topic anymore...). For me it's not really understandable that the Vor'cha being the vessel with stronger stats and being more expensive is available earlier than the Vutpa.
