2nd question for discussion

You feel like a battlecruiser is too weak or a race too strong? Go ahead and discuss it here :)

Why won't you build canaverals remoores and norways?

why
why
WHY

Is it the low damage output? Survivability? Cost and/or build time?

I seldomly use these myself, main problem being damage output and survivability.

Canaverals simply don't have the damage output to be of much use, and they die fast. They have their ECM³ which gives them survivability, but this makes them quite micro-intense and more a ship that you'd use almost exclusively and not just for support.

I actually like Remores, their shield killer ability is really strong and always handy (well, against anything not borg anyway) and the secondary 40% damage boost for an allied vessel is really nice too. Seen a cube with vector calculation and order to chaos?
Problem is that the PD-phasers can cause OOS, even though I really like the ability, its very micro intense due to the very limited time and the extremely small range. I hope to see a longer-range, longer-time special in V4 that doesn't defend against all torps but only destroys like one torpedo/second while active.

For Norways, I have to admit that I never really tried to play with them. Maysons small yard is already good enough that you don't neccessarily need that extra ship option. Similar to the Canav, I believe, its combat stats are substandard, it has higher requirements and it's micro-intense. I don't even remember its third ability, but I know that the primary, the special energy power recharge, is useful but doesn't cut it unless in numbers, and if in numbers is only useful for recharging large ships like balls, cubes, warbirds etc. since it would take far too long to select each single ship and use the ability on each single monsoon/intrepid/whatever.

Canaverals are meant for supporting Sabers, but if you skip straight to Chassis 1 then they are too slow and weak to work with Monsoons and Intrepids. You can't use Sensor Blackout while EC3M is up, and Sensor Synergy isn't as good as a Sensor Platform. They also stop being able to keep up with a group of Sabers when Hyper-Impulse gets researched. Which usually occurs about 30 seconds after Canaverals are unlocked.

Norways had a period of popularity when first introduced because Plasma Coil was too good at blowing up groups of smaller ships. Devs rightfully nerfed it and people lost interest. Emergency Power might be of some use to recharge a Defiant's Critical Shot or an Intrepid's Tricobalt Torpedo, but the return from the micro involved is not really enough to justify the effort. Assault Mode might have been worth using for tanking stations if the Monsoon wasn't equipped with HDShields, and is completely obsoleted if the Fed player pulls an Ambassador from Warp-In.

The Remore comes out the gate with a terrific shield-cracking ability (four Remores can crush the shields of a Rank 5 Tavara in seconds), and solid stats (standing easily with Akiras); but it's other abilities aren't as useful, it requires Chassis 2, and it competes for Eraudi yard slots with E2s. It's also the most tri-heavy of all the Fed's standard (ie non mixed-tech) ships, and against an aggressive raider it might be wiser to invest that into special abilities or two (almost three) Akiras.

These are all special ships which means they cost extra tritanium and LESS dilithium for what you get. Since feds almost always find themselves with an overabundance of tritanium, adding some of these to your build queues can allow you to maintain constant production when di is your issue or you could even put up an additional yard just for special ships to use you economic power more completely.

The second and best reason to make them is the same reason you would pick any ship from the menu: counters. A lot of players seems to decide on their build on launch and then just spam that one ship no matter what comes at them. First, these are special ships, so they counter ADAI. Inrepids, bugs, and E1 are all common early game ships that you can annihilate with these vessels. If you want to build monsoons, intrepids, or akiras (all common early strats), a decent opponent will switch to their own special ships or short range ships, depending. Build canaverals for the shorties and the norways for the rest. In the late game you are probably building lots of larger, long ranged ships - E2, Avalon, phalanx. A decent opponent will build ships that counter that range and probably try to use more torpedo ships (more bang for the buck against big opponents.) With the right specials, the Remore is your new best friend.

The last reason is for the special weapons. The fed special ships are less impressive thansome of the other races special ships, in my opinion. There is no Pink beam of death - which is the only reason anyone makes C17, lehval - with its many awesome options, or ion storm in the fed arsenal. But, the specials I like are:

Norway: assault mode. Another way to spend down your tritanium and make your norways even better.

Canaveral: E3CM. Turn it on and the monsoon will tank. Turn it off and the canaveral tanks. A good way to spread the small firepower from early fleets or to take advantage of counters in the later game (monsoon tank the longs, canaveral tank the shorts)

Remore: point defense. Spread a few of these around your fleet and for ten seconds most late game vessels become a lot weaker. Also: a good foil to sang swarms - trigger this special, trigger the E2 special and blow them to hell.
The shield killing thing. Wonderful against starbases.

Add these to your fleet and try them out. They have their uses and can really improve your chances. But... like all ships, especially special ships, don't spam them since they lack the pure firepower to be useful against non-countered enemies.

- The remore sucks against kvorts.
- The canaveral sucks against all long range, and anything with tactical weapons or high density shields (Though most of those ships are shortranged, so it isn't terrible -monsoon, S2).
- The norway is bad against anything with ablative armor (vorcha, ambassador) or fasttracking computers (shrike, canaverals).
