Oh you don't want to do that, if you knew this guy as I do you wouldn't contact him. That's all I am going to say on the subject.

Maj is right, we don't need that kind of drama here. We've both had our encounters with SJ in the past, and none of us wants to have the same shit again.

Hey people, this mod is not yet dead! :woot: University has kept me from making much progress apart from working on my balance model, but now that will change!
Here's an overview of the factions that will appear in the mod. Please note that only the Feds and Cardies are planned as playable at the time, the others will be AI races. Also, the faction listed as "pirate syndicates" is actually several races, they're just very similar so they don't have separate entries. But in actual gameplay, you will have separate outposts for them.
So that is that for now, hope to be able to bring you moar screenies soon!

The Federation

Who are they and what do they want?
StarFleet officers and mining experts brought together to secure the Federation's part of the Wastelands, namely the Avalon stations, and to eliminate pirates opposing them.
What are they using?
Their ships are mostly from the TLE era. With most of their mining equipment coming from the companies and StarFleet subsidiaries that are involved, they have access to industrial-grade mining freighters and -stations.
Who are their allies/enemies?
They are loosely allied with the Klingon Empire and are friends with the Romulan Star Empire and the Cardassian Union. They oppose the syndicates that are hiding in their space.

The Klingon Empire

Who are they and what do they want?

Influential houses of the Klingon Empire with decades, if not centuries of mining experience. They want to keep their space clean and expand where possible.
What are they using?
Their warships are modern Klingon designs, and their mining equipment is similarly advanced.
Who are their allies/enemies?
They are loosely allied with the Federation. They continue to battle pirate syndicates and Cardassian forces for control over the Wastelands. They do not have any contact to the Romulan Star Empire.

The Cardassian Union

Who are they and what do they want?

Officers of the Cardassian Fleet. They want to secure a part of the Wastelands to recover from the horrible losses suffered during the Dominion War.
What are they using?
The Cardassians have always been effective miners, and although their equipment is old, it's just as effective as the other factions' equipment. Their warships are mainly designs from the Border Conflicts and Dominion War, as the Union is forced to use older ships and designs while the fleet is reconstructed.
Who are their allies/enemies?
They are friends with the Federation. Their main antagonists in the Wastelands are the Klingons and various pirate syndicates. There are still rumors that they are allied with the Romulans, but there is no evidence for any sort of alliance.

The Renegade Houses

Who are they and what do they want?
Klingon Houses that feel uncomfortable with the Empire's politics, especially concerning the Federation. They want to expand their personal sphere of influence and remove the Federation from the Wastelands.
What are they using?
Most of their ships are refitted destroyers and cruisers from the old days of the Empire. They are very good in increasing the performance of these old designs. Their mining equipment is the same as the Empire's.
Who are their allies/enemies?
They openly oppose the Federation and the Cardassian Union. Their relationship to the other Klingons is somewhat nebulous: They support the Empire's efforts, but may go their own ways if the Empire's actions do not fulfill their expectations.
They regard pirates as a mere nuisance and would try to battle the Romulans if they saw a chance for victory.

The Romulan Star Empire

Who are they and what do they want?
Officers of the Star Empire, protecting and securing a part of the Wastelands which they have claimed.
What are they using?
The Romulan equipment is top-notch as are their warships. Unlike the Klingons, they maintain only small stations and colonies. They employ packs of small and very agile ships, maximizing the effectiveness of their advanced weaponry.
Who are their allies/enemies?
The Romulans do not interfere with the other factions' power games. They will, however, defend their space against intruders and pirates. They are friends with the Federation, as it respects their borders.

Pirate Syndicates

Who are they and what do they want?
Talarians, Yridians, Orions, assorted scum of the quadrants. Their shady business has flourished in the Wastelands, but they are about to be wiped out by the major forces of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.
What are they using?
They are using everything they can get. Their technology is inferior to everything the major forces have, but explorers or unprotected miners quickly fall prey to their fast warships.
Who are their allies/enemies?
They are opposed by everyone trying to establish a permanent presence in the Wastelands. Since the Klingons and Romulans have already driven most of them out of their territories, they now find themselves fighting the Federation and Cardassians.

Hey, awesome mod you have here. I stumbled upon this topic by accident, but now I'm really interested. I hope that you can get something out to the community soon, because this sounds like it's gonna be awesome.

Just a question, though: Is this made for stock AII, or is it for Flop? And if for the latter, is it being made with the Mod Manager?

This is for stock im pretty sure.

Yup, this is stock A2. Although almost all of the stock graphics have been replaced, so regarding the map objects and effects, this will be pretty much on par with FO graphics (as far as A2 can handle it). Believe me, I work with the best stuff you get for stock A2. I'm using Yacuzza's Midnight Universe, models from the best modelers in the community and I even secured permission from Achilles to use some previously unreleased content from AOW4. I love it, and I think you'll like it, too.  :woot:

I think you could patch it to work in FO, but that's not what FO is for. If I ever have the time to make a mod for FO, I want to use ALL the awesome features it has to offer.

Here are some screenies with two of the Romulan NPCs.

A Shrike attacking a Klingon destroyer. These Romulans pack capacitor disruptors, vastly increasing their rate of fire in the first seconds of the attack.

A mixed Rom/Fed formation over an uninhabitable class-D planetoid. The big Romulan birds are Venators, the smaller Fed ships are Eagles.

The Klingon Che'var class battleship is about to be surprised by a cloaked Romulan task force. Take care, Klinkers, these birds mean business!

*sigh* They never listen... The opening bursts of a Venator disruptor are enough to make them flee the battlefield. Or is that ship just turning around so it can fire back? ...  :shifty:

----------

EDIT: Let me add a little progress report.

So far, the Feds haven't been completed. At the moment, I am putting some NPCs into the game, trying to populate the Wastelands before the player comes in. When we have a working Fed side, we want to go shoot stuff up, right? It's mostly Klingons and Romulans now. The Cardies I'm afraid won't make it into the beta, but meh. I'd rather have a working beta with a full player race instead of a broken one with two of them.
If you take a good look at the upper screenshots, you'll see that the Romulan disruptor texture looks new. It is. Completed it just a few days ago. I'm kind of proud of it, weapon textures are my specialty.
Also, I will probably write tutorials for this one in MMM. Over at MSFC, most people seemed to like the idea, so why not? I like doing new stuff, you know, boldly going and all of that.

I didn't quite get this part of your reply to until I looked over at the text below your avatar picture eariler and saw that you are a staff member at A2files. That's awesome, and now I eagerly look forward to Wastelands even more knowing that you really are top-notch.

No, because it wasn't publicly released. Achilles made AOW4.1.7 which was basically AOW3 plus additional content for the existing races, but didn't add any new ones. He sent it around to beta testers and long-time fans, which is how I got it. He's very liberal with his work, so a few things from it will show up in Wastelands. I haven't heard from him in a while, last time he talked about AOW he was working on something big which would take a lot of time.

AOW, or Art of War, is a stock A2 total conversion by Achilles, a long-time modder and community member. AOW is generally regarded as one of the best mods ever created, as it includes a buttload of great-looking units including a whole new race made up by Achilles. Also, it's pretty hard to beat, a real challenge. There are three parts you have to install in order, each adds two races and updates the other ones. If you have the time, zip over to A2Files and give AOW a try.
