ST Armada 2 with WIN Vista
Talk about anything related to old versions of Armada.

after you install 3.1.0 install 3.1.2 again, im pretty sure its order specific.
sending him the fleetops folder wont give him the shortcuts for fleetops in the start menu, plus it wont add the registry entries, its safer to have him install fleet ops himself.
if you both install the same version of fleetops then you will be able to play against eachother via your favourite method. if u patch to 3.1.2 he will need to as well, if you are on different versions the game will tell you version mismatch. this applies to any modding you do, if u change most files it will make u mismatch. certain files that dont affect gameplay wont cause this. i know for certain that sound files wont. but odfs will.
as for playing multiplayer, the methods are mostly the same from armada 2, the gamespy methods are identical i believe. most online players use tunngle.
one of our veteran players has created a good guide for fleetops, it includes details of how to use tunngle to play fleetops, it is located here:
http://fleetopsguide.freecp.net/
but is currently down as the host freecp is being annoying lol. it may move hosts soon.
as for now, if u pm me i will be happy to guide u through getting tunngle working. its far better than previous vpns fleetops has used such as hamachi and wippien. hopefully u will like fleetops and join our online gaming community, there is on average 10 players on tunngle most days. so u will find games often.

WOW, awesome, man! You seem to me like a pro on that subject
So I'll try to convince him to "upgrade" onto FO ;-)
I tested it out and it looks fantastic but there is one small question i'd like to ask quietly: Is there any German interface package? Of course I can speak English and understand it perfectly but it's hard to relax while playing (coz I need to translate all the time). I bet there isn't German files but if there are, please tell me
To the multiplayer thing: Doesn't it work with Hamachi or Wippien anymore? When gamespy wasn't working quite well we used to play over Hamachi. And what about that tunngle, does it displace Gamespy?
But all in all a very cool and fresh version of Armada II with great textures

lol nobody has called me a pro before. i'll try not to let it get to my head.
about "upgrading" to fleetops, u can have armada 2 and fleetops on the same computer with no trouble, as long as they are in different folders. u can install fleetops with or without a2, doesnt make a difference at all.
im pretty sure fleetops is provided only in english, the people who make it (the devs) are german mostly, so i doubt it would be hard for them to make one if demand was high enough. but i think they are focussed on improving the game itself. there are several unofficial translations going on around but i havent heard much on them for a while. a forum search might be in order.
fleetops is compatible with gamespy still, and all vpns (hamachi, wippien, tunngle etc) the game doesnt know what tunngle is, it just sees tunngle as a lan connection. so to play via tunngle you tell the game its actually lan, and tunngle pretends to be a lan connection. same for hamachie and wippien, so hamachi and wippien still work as they always have done, which compared to tunngle isnt too good, all those random disconnections are reduced in tunngle. and there is less lag and bigger fleetops room, and no need to add people to see them. but if u still wanna use hamachi feel free to, just nearly all players are on tunngle now.
to play via gamepsy just do what u did in armada, push the gamespy button, ive never played using gamespy before.
to play via any vpn u click the local area network (TCP/IP) option, ignore ipx lol. the game will see your vpn as a lan connection and you're set.
fleetops has much more than textures, it has better gameplay and new units and proper balance. no more are u restricted to just going akira->galaxy->sovvie->win if u had more sovvies than your enemy had warbirds etc.
the warp feature also went, to stop people warping in killing stuff and warping out.

You got the Galaxy and Sovereign the wrong way around.

you couldnt get the sovvie before the galaxy it required the vulcan research building, the galaxy only required the big yard. the sovvie was more powerful than the galaxy class.
my point was that one always just built the ship that was the highest tech. no reason to build any more akiras, just spam sovvies when u can. it was really boring.

When I played online, I rarely saw Sovereigns because the Galaxy was faster with stronger weapons and hull. Aside from having a special weapon, that Sovereign was mostly useless.
Still, I know what you mean about spamming the best, since everything built stupidly fast and weaker ones had no use.

thats a good point, also the galaxy could be built without that annoying vulcan research thing, which was expensive. i loved the sovvie special though
you could build several repair ships and have them follow your fleet for healing lol.
i hated the way every race was exactly the same. even the borg, a sovvie could take out a borg cube

Picard must've told everyone where to shoot the Cube.
The worst ass-pull in Star Trek history (at least Endgame had the stuff introduced to the audience before blowing up Borg cubes like they were made of cardboard.)

The bit about about telling them where to fire always confused me; apparently, Picards target was suggested to be waste extraction. I wonder how that blew up the ship...

maybe the cube had a momentary weakness that only picard could know because of his ability to hear the hive mind?
like the duras sisters could shoot the enterprise because the knew the shield frequency, maybe picard knew the cube's weaknesses.

where was it implied it was waste extraction?

Ronald D. Moore suggested that the vulnerable spots on the Borg cube in Star Trek: First Contact were waste extraction. (AOL chat, 1998)

lol sounds like he was joking. what waste would borg have? do borg use toilets?
