Tried patching in the VM, it also didn't recognize that I had the game installed. Probably because I used the iso and not the physical disk. Problematic.

EDIT: Disregard this! Turns out I was using the wrong VM of the two I had. Trying on the other one.

the program files were all still there in the VM right? the iso is just a standard copy of a2 right? i've never had an original copy of a2 in my life, and i was always able to patch with no problem.

I had exactly this problem about 10 days ago.
I got around it by using an existing XP VM (I use VMs for some of what I do).
Installed A2, patched to 1.2.
Extracted registry keys (to import onto my Win 7 x64 system).
Patched to 1.2.5 to ensure it all works, then scrubbed it and installed FO :)

Doing it the way I did means you can effectively make the game portable in as much as - you can install it anywhere and on any PC you like that can run it, but you still need to use the original game CD.

This now allows me to wipe A2/FO when I please and reinstall simply by unpacking an archive.

If you want me to paste in the registry file content, I'd be happy to do so (assuming that's permitted) :)
