I'm not speaking from experience when it comes down to map making but i just tried making one and i'm confused over my head as to why things don't get done as they did with the old A2 editor. Could a request be put forward to the team to devise a new easier map editor or is it just me?

You just use the function keys to navigate, tab to go back, and click for properties.

Yeah at first I had truble with the map editor too. So im gonna put some tips in this post for people having trouble.

If u have vista make sure you run as an administrator that way your maps will actually save.

When you first create your map when it asks for name type the name then add ".bzn" without the quotes to the end of the name.

When you run the editor run in windowed mode, this option can be set in the graphics option menu.

Once the map editor loads hit ctrl-r to get the enviorment dialog..set the size of ur map first thing!! You will get a lil dialog that pops up saying the editor needs to save and reload the map to effect changes, click yes(you wont see the dialog unles your running in windowed mode)

After setting size Alt-click to create starting loacations. when you set starting loactions double click the point to rename the positions to "Camera_x" X being 1 2 3 4 if u have 4 starting positions then u will have to name the points Cameria_1 through Camera_4. Also in the ctrl-r menu set any unused slots to "empty" this is on one of the tabs in the ctrl-r dialog. You can add up to 8 starting positions I think.

Tab key is your main menu key when u navigate menus such as map objects and such use tab combined with the function keys "F1-F12" Once U navigate to desired object just mouse over to where u wish to place the object and push the coresponding Function key.

To delete an object just select it and push delete...to remove the red grid footprint of an object place a unity station down in the area in question then delete the unity station and it will delete the footprint.

You can acces the save map function from the game options at top right corner.

Hope this helps.

Happy mapping!!!!

One more problem, when im creating an asteroid field using the crtl click method to put points down (using the environment settings) and then setting it to asteroid belt it errors out, a picture is attached to show you what i mean. I don't know if its supposed to do that or what but its annoying to say the least. (see attached pic) Every time i click on ok after that the entire program errors out and shuts down.

actually asteroid belts cannot be created this way in the current version of fleet operations. they do not make use of the pathing currently.
you can find asteroids in the "map objects" section. use block objects to make them impassable

i'll put a todo up to look why the function is crashing. we just forgot about checking if this option works, so this wasn't intended.

I had some hard time with the map editor, and now am able to produce maps. Although I think you should move up the map editor on todo-priority, as it will increase the number of maps people will create.

I have a problem - whenever i modified a map i noticed i cannot see the minimap in instant action setup - i also cannot choose where to start (yes i have start positions set to fixed locations) - when i click on minimap hidden to show it all that happens is a little black box appears in minimap preview in top left corner O.o

Any ideas?

What you need to do is manually make a mnimap icon. After you're done editing your map, scroll to the top right of the map and zoom all the way in (so that you can't see the view rectangle on the minimap), take a screenshot then exit. Paste it into your favorite painting program, crop it down  to exactly and only the minimap, resize it to 160x160, and save it as [map name].bmp .

hello, this is a map editor tutorial for armada 1, but it works great for armada 2 and for fleet ops...

also note that the map name no longer is restricted to 11 words max as mentioned in the guide :whistling:
