i didnt see this mentioned, so i have two computers, realy old one (1 cpu core 2gb ram win xp) and second is new laptop lenovo (4core intel, 8 gb ram win8.1)

solution to fleetops in win 8.1 is simple, instal it on old pc once, copy game folder to usb drive, or other data medium, and bring it to your win 8.1 computer....

game runs just fine, no virtual system or other programs are necesary.

now i have my fleet ops data folder stored in my back up drive.

be creative, use old pc of a friend, in work, in internet coffe shop, or some pc museum...

Good luck , have fun.

Creative thinking, Shadow, I don't think most people would have thought of that. Good work.

Hello All,
I am new to this Fleet Ops, my question is do i need to install A2 first then FO or just install FO? Been playing A2 for eons but *sigh* have windows 8.1 so i miss the game especially playing online with my friends. going to try one of the players suggestion to see if it works be nice to play A2 on W8.1

When you run the FO installer, it will ask for either an A2 disk or an installed copy of A2. Just run the installer and keep the disk on hand.

michael_appleby wrote:I actually got this to work in the end. I used OllyDbg to decompile the Armada.exe and changed the window style which the USER32.CreateWindowExA method was passing (originally WS_POPUP [HEX:80000000] and changed to WS_CHILD|WS_VISIBLE [HEX:50000000]). The main menu animations no longer work with this window style, but the rest of the game is fully playable. This would be a neat addition to an Armada Patch 1.4?

Hello,
Has any one here contacted Michael and tried the way he described? I believe he is the only one who has ever succeed playing Armada 1 in Windows 8. Windows 10 will be out next month and I'm afraid that lots of old games will not be supported by it then.

I was able to get Star Trek: Armada 1 working on Windows 8.1 64bit nVidia 780 GTX. Here is what I did:

Step 1:
I followed the steps on the site below to patch the Armada.exe file. This step was not required but it seems to make Armada work better.

Here is the site: http://www.aaroncurley.com/debugging-pa ... ek-armada/

Step 2:
I copied the ntdll.dll from an earlier version of Windows into the Armada folder. I tried the file from Windows XP and Windows 7 both of them worked for me. This was an important step as Armada.exe will crash in the Windows 8.x ntdll.dll file.

Step 3:
I downloaded the DxWnd program. This program actually allows Armada to run, however it will not work without step 2 above.

DxWnd is available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

Shortcut:
For a shortcut I have collected all the files you need and put them into a single zip file. You can simply follow the steps below:
1. Download the Armada.zip file
2. Extract the files into your Armada folder (overwriting the Armada.exe file)
3. Run DxWnd.exe
4. Double-click on the "Star Trek - Armada" item

DxWnd
Note: below are the settings I used for the DxWnd.ini configuration file, in case you want to do the work yourself.
