Ablative armor IS designed for combat, more specifically it absorbs plasma based energy into it, weakening it but without tearing through first shot as regular hull would

Ablative armour absorbs the incoming weapons energy and vapourises in the process. It can be made and fitted quickly, and is therefore good for multiple 'hit and fade' fights, but its useless in a prolonged battle.

I still dont understand why most people act like the Defiant is a god ship anyway. It's not. True it was designed to fight the Borg, but not on its own. Its only good in packs. It's just a Federation advanced Bird of Prey. Warship, not Battleship or Dreadnought.

yep, i think atlantis is correct. thats the same image i have of the defiant, too. well it will still be counted as a battleship in fleet operations cause we have no "warship"s - isn't every ship in an rts a warship? .. ok as i think of freighters, they are not Tongue

Hmm, how to define "warship". Erm, I think that if you have a ship the size of an ST destroyer, with more weapons, that's a warship. Kinda like how a dreadnought is cruiser-sized but with battleship weaponry. A warship is destroyer/corvette-sized but with cruiser weaponry. thats the system i've used for ColdFrontII, anywho.

Your right it's just the Federations attempt to make a ship designed just to fight. It is more powerful then other ships that size but thats about it. While it can take an Excelsior class without much damage and is probabaly equal to a Nebula, a Galaxy would probabaly take one out fairly easy.
