The question I have I don't think has ever been addressed on any Trek board or in any of the series. When did the Federation come into contact with the Cardassians, I don't know why I'm asking but it just keeps bugging me that I don't know.

i think it was when we passed though the worm hole

(o hang on no it't wer'nt coz ds9 was raceing the cardies to the worm hole i don't know really)

The Cardies and Feds made first contact sometime between then and the start of TNG. O'Brien served on a ship that participated in the 'Border Wars' between the two races prior to his assignment on the Enterprise.

look  it's quite simple, enterprise d made made first contact, and the character of gul ducat was the negotiator(that's the first cardassian we ever see) than thay got into a war(naturaly) and o'brien was a soldier(that's why he hates them)
