Regarding the AI thing, I've seen that behavior just about an hour ago.  Was playing me and 4 AI, FFA.  Suddenly began getting giant waves of Dominion and Romulan ships coming and hitting my perimeter line (I got them to attack it instead of just flying by to head for my base by putting 5 starbases, 3 sensor platforms, and 2 mining outposts there.)  They fought side by side until none of my ships or stations were in their targetting range, and then only about 10% of them began fighting each other, the rest just pushed on toward my base like they were allies.  Matters were only made worse by the fact that it took so long for them to break my perimeter defenses that the AIs had spawned their next fleet wave, so by the time my base and reserve fleets got hit, the blue/brown blob of AI ships was actually larger than my base.
