I agree that there's nothing more fun than using a warship capable of crushing entire fleets. But using Deep Space Nine as a reference, this ship seems too powerful. First of all, they are called Planetary Defenders, like the ones seen above Cardassia in the Final Episode.
Second, they are capable of crushing whole fleets? I don't think so. While they are very powerful vessels, Jake specifically stated them as being three times as powerful as a Galaxy Class. The ability to crush whole fleets or stations in Fleetops would be an unfair advantage for the Dominion. Lets also not forget that the Defiant and two Birds of Prey destroyed a Battleship in Operation Return.
In conclusion, this ship should get an offensive value reduction or at least bring up the offensive and defensive value of the Galaxy and Sovereign Class ships to make them 1/3 as the strength of the Planetary Defender. The Reman Scimitar should also be equal in strength to the Planetary Defender since Shinzon lead multiple engagements against the Dominion with the Scimitar; all successful.
sigh; I dunno how often I said the following: gameplay>canon; always! - This is nothing against you, but why do I always get the feeling that "canon" inside a game is the holy grail for star trek players; I mean this a rts game and I don't really want to play a game that is imbalanced but canon. Maybe I am not trekkie enough, but I always fail to see the point in such discussions. (regarding imbalance:: just go and ask some of the "old" players about the V3PR balance)

I agree, I don't think that the episodes of startrek were ever designed to be "balanced" : aka in Voyager, the Feds brush of the Borg as a mere nuissance... and I don't think it is fair to say this is due to some huge technological leap. Canon seems to be fine for many ship classes, as well as keeping with the art... but I doubt many of the producers of Startrek films/shows know too much about military strategy, or even about how powerful each ship is in comparison to another on the show (it seems to change depending on who's in charge... and what dramatic effect is needed). I guess canon gives a rough idea of what should be there... but no more than that.

So, I ask again, is the Tavara supposed to be the same class as the Scimitar?, or is the Scimitar something new in V3 Final, like a mixed tech thing ro something? Does anyone know?
Oh, and on the cannon topic that seems to be so hot right now, I believe ship strengths will be well balanced for gameplay people, do you really think FO team is gonna deliver an unplayable game? What Im more worried about as far as cannon abilities is size, scale, and proper special weapons. For instance, I never thought defence patterns, or point defence phasers made sense on the Akira class. (not that I didnt use it to kick klingon butt) The Akira was always supposed to be a more offencive than defencive ship. I do not ever expect it to use all 15 torpedo tubes in the game, (torpedo tube info coming from the Star Trek Encyclopedia) that would just affect balance too much. Just give each ship a comparable task as what it would have in the ST universe. Basically, dont make the defiant a basic unit again, or make the Nebula Class a repair ship and Im good.

Scimitar will be a special unit in the game: probably capturable on a specific map (or at least fightable).. It will not be mixed tech or the ilk.

...I guess? ... but what is "tech the tech" "tech the tech" was the "stand-in" inside the scripts, when something could only be fixed by doing something weird with let's say the deflector dish; so the script authors wrote "Geordi: Hmmm, it might work if we tech the tech" then they passed it to the "technical script writers" who replaced that "tech the tech" with something that "makes sense", like refitting the deflector dish to fire a phased beam of unphased glouns through the 5th dimension

"Lets also not forget that the Defiant and two Birds of Prey destroyed a Battleship in Operation Return." You say it yourself Battleship. The Dominion Battleship isnt the Dreadnought. One of it destroyed the Valient. That was a Dreadnought. The size of a Battleships is like a Galaxy class. The Dread more the 2 of it.
