This is probally a bit random but the sound and music that plays when you first start up the game is straight out of descent 3 (an old game). Is there any reason for this?

A lot of the sounds and such are reused from other things when deemed appropriate: for example the in game music!

   A little idea about the ingame music: I saw some days ago Star Trek The Motion Picture and at the very beginning of the movie, when the three Klingon ships are headed toward that cloud, the music sounds very Klingon to me. Have you considered to use it for Klingon soundtrack ? The Romulan soundtrack of version 3 PR is very good, I hope you don't change it.

there are enough free soundeditors out there; AND as far as I know the game doesn't care what music you use; so-> you can create your own soundtracks and use them ingame; just get the mp3's convert them to WAV with the suitable settings and cut them together;

 I didn't noticed, I really don't play with the Klingons. I tried a couple of times and the game crashed when a tried to use a special weapon.  Sad

The thing that causes that crash with Klingons is the probe from the Boras (?) class starship
