I was just remembering one of the Romulan special abilities which allows you to lay a teeny, tiny mine and I was thinking.... why not lay a bunch of mines instead (they could sum up to do the same damage as the one, though). This idea was inspired by another recent thread when someone mentioned how they could make realistic minefields with the replaceweapon odf. Not only would this look more realistic (and thus more awesome)... but possibly it could pave the way for laying mines around your starbase as a special ability for... perhaps the Romulans... or someone else? Perhaps even certain maps could have extensive minefields within them... or regenerating ones, like those around the DS9 wormhole Let me know what you folks think

am using them in Art of War part 3 using the cardassian dreadnought missile specile, they look excellent but have the drawback of being either mobil or easy as hell to destroy.

mines would be nice but it would be hard to balance cause they would have to be good enought to make them a defense but not cost to much and not take long to build but then you can make your self invincable and just lay mines whal building up a huge fleet come out and destroy some things that could be done first have friendly fire the mines will detonate and if you destroy the mines they explode you would just have to figure out how to make it so when 1 goes off they dont all go up and you have to make a new mine field again now you could make it so they have strong sheilds but that is lame something so small yet has realy good shields you could just make a lot in their base and they die one thing that would be amazing yet I have no clue how to make it happen is if you could make mines that intercepted torps and other artillery shots and maby even pulse phasers, and now that I think about it it is almost exactly like corbomite reflector but it would have to have it permanently on one time use and intercept them

Well it need not be self-replicating with immediate effect. There can be a delay of say 5 to 10 seconds for the lost mine to be replenished in the field. Consequently, if a whole fleet were to move through, it would end up detonating all available mines and remove the field. Also, we could have special field weapons detonate mines e.g Griffin sensor jammer style field spread weapons. Also, the mines need not be too powerful, but do damage enough to bring down shields of the larger ships (maybe with minimal hull damage) and destroy smaller ones like scouts.
mine laying can be part of the run about style ships' special weapons. So it is doable.

If there were a ton of mines actively using abilities, wouldn't that raise a lag issue for online matches?

Not really (I think)... they are small and not that graphics intensive (the explosions might be though...)
I think all the ideas we've had so far are really good. I think it would be nice to see this implemented for the kligons special gravity mines and the romulans plasma mine especially.

No mines for the Klingons, Borg or Dominion please. Roms should have cloaking mines, and the Feds only should have self-replicating mines.
The Borg and Dominion should have the means to deactivate and detect the 2 types of mines. Klingon ships have a higher production rate with the new release, so they would not need either detection or deactivation. Their ships can earn Stovokor by sacrificing themselves to bring down the mines.
As stated, the mines should not be too strong. Just deal damage depending on number deployed to shields and hull based on the class of ship as described.
But please - NOT FOR THIS RELEASE. Don't want to delay V3 anymore.

Hmmm... well currently the Klingons do have mines (those gravity ones)... that was the only reason I was suggesting it. I do like the idea that Fed would get self-replicating ones I agree with the delay thingy however... this was just my idea for a "future release" or patch

from the current point of development only the romulans (generix support) and the federation (defiant with klingon mixed-tech) have access to mines. There might be more complex mines in future versions, like cloaking once

How about a ship that has the ability to lay a field expiediant mine field that self destructs say after 360 seconds. You would have to construct, the module for the yard, then be able to build the ship to use the (Salvo Launched Area Amunitions ) SLAM ability. Reloads have to be procured at the yard with the Slam module . Only one module can be built. Special Point value say 4 points for the module. Each SLam Round has 8 micro photon torpedo warheads to be deployed in a 360 degree from where the warhead is deployed to. Each ship carries 3 rounds. has a point value of 3 points per ship. doing this should balance it out. a further module upgrade could be self replacating mines ,replacing the micro torpedo warheads , with self replacating type mines would require a nother shipyard module worth 2 special points. For cloaked mines , another module , or an upgrade to the Slam module.
