Swiss German is a language apart....even if you know Hochdeutsch, schweizer deutsch is alien!

Regardless of where you go in Germany, if you're a foreigner who only knows Hochdeutsch, you're usally  SOL. Except if you're in the area of Hannover, their dialect there is Hochdeutsch ^^

There's just too many dialects for even Germans to make heads or tails out of.

The worst case scenario would be south-eastern Bavaria, though...I honestly doubt the language the older people there speak even qualifies as German anymore...but then again, I was stationed there for 6 months, so my point of view may be a little biased (AVZ für BW-Soldaten, die in Bayern stationiert sind!)

Considering Germany's history and geography, I would be surprised if it spoke a unified language.  Then again, I suppose, by that logic, it's astounding that English has so few regional differences here in America.
