Does anyone have a link to, or would anyone be willing to write up a basic map-making tutorial?

I've just tried to make my first map, and instead of ending up with twp teams starting on opposite ends of the map, their basses were right on top of each other blasting away at each other. So, the ability to set start points, start resources, etc, would be muchly appriciated.  

The threads on the board and the map read me file taught me how to place objects, but not much more than that. I figured out how to name my map on my own, but am having trouble getting much beyond that.
