The only thing I ever used troopship for was to replenish the crew on a ship after my repair ships fix it up.

i used them quite a bit, as i am a player that usually does most of my research & upgrades first, i tend to have a shortage of ships, so those troop ships are quite useful at fixing this for me  . |

I would use them to capture enemy construction ships and build up a mixed fleet with mixed specials and attack the enemy!
