As of Friday 17 June I'm an Officer Candidate PO1 in the United States Navy. Going to be a nuclear-trained surface officer. We don't have matter/antimatter reaction assemblies or phasers, but we do have uranium fueled fission reactors and Tomahawk and Standard missiles, so pretty close. I'm going to be commissioned soon after the new year and am going straight to the Fleet for a tour before Nuke School and a follow-on tour in the reactor department of 4.5 acres and 100,000 tons of American resolve.

Any natural-born American citizens with strong backgrounds in math and physics and a desire to serve should definitely check out the program.

Woo Hoo, another nuclear convert!!  I've been going to school for nuclear engineering for years already.  I know alot of friends that have gone into the navy.  Apparently, its very easy to find a job afterwards that pays loads of $$.  Do you have to complete a BS in nuclear engineering, or are you going to be a nuclear technician?  If you need a BS, may I suggest the UW-Madison's nuclear engineering program, we're always ranked in the top two or three.  

By the way, any real spaceship we can launch that can travel to mars or beyond is gonna have nuclear reactors on board.

ewm, I'm not going to be on subs, my career will be split between conventionally powered surface ships and aircraft carriers. My security clearance is basically for technical details of the plant, not operations. Everyone tends to know we're there, even if they don't know quite where exactly : )

cpt neutron, I'm an electrical engineer, but at some point down the road the Navy will sponsor me for a graduate degree in nuclear engineering at MIT, UTenn, or a few others (not real sure about the list).

As far as the spaceship thing goes, modern ships are going "all-electric" which means the boiler or reactor creates steam which directly drives electrical generators. That electricity can be used to power motors attached to the propellors, or the propulsion grid of an ion drive in a spacecraft, or anything else electrical. Pretty neat stuff.
