Not more than the FO Crew is of FO. Wink

The design has pulse phasers and I never saw them firing, so I made them fire.
What's so wrong about it? huh

What's the point of the Discovery? It looks like an Intrepid minus the firepower

Seems like a lot of ship just to mount a torpedo tube ... I mean the Defiant had two tubes capable of burst firing quantum torpedos as I remember. I like your concept of a fast, maneuverable escort. May I suggest a crew more in the 50 to 60 range? Steaming watch of maybe 10 sailors, with extra battle crew for Red Alert? It's a small ship after all.

Well, you see, the Discovery class was developed as a science vessel during the TNG era and upgraded later (in the 2370's).

It originally had no pulse phasers and the saucer section was mainly crew compartments and science labs. The torpedo launcher itself is mounted beneath the saucer section so that it doesn't take away too much room. Thus the big crew. A torpedo launcher is essential for a science vessel though, as it acts as a probe launcher.

Later, when more weapons were needed, the two pulse phaser cannons were implemented and the ships role was altered. But it's still not like the Defiant or Intreped. It's a real "escort / light cruiser" about the size of the Nova.

Still, it is a small ship, easy to build. You don't need much resources and because of it's design it can be used for different tasks. You need a small, cheap allround-ship somewhere, take a Discovery class.

So the extra crew is science staff? That makes sense.

Right.

And when you send a Discovery class to a pure escort mission,
the science staff can be left out, giving room for evacuating damaged ships.

In case of bigger diplomatic missions,
you can make room for diplomatic personnel and so on...

You know, I love things to be canon and frankly, you just put together a model that looks alot like ones we've already seen and added pulse phasers that exist only on the Defiant class. I mean by all means go ahead and show it off, but I don't care for it.

Pulse phasers exist only on the Defiant, hm, maybe... but only until some author writes something else. Only because you have never seen a newer ship with pulse phasers doesn't mean it's impossible.

If I build a ship, it's non-canon from the beginning as I'm no author of a Star Trek episode. But it's not non-canon for using a weapon system that is canon. If you were a ship's developer, seeing that you have a science vessel that is easy to produce, but worthless in battle, you begin thinking. And if you encounter a war situation with need for better armament, why wouldn't you add pulse phaser cannons to a small ship that produces enough energy to power them? I mean, they work and are battle tested. So use on a maneuverable ship that can turn fast enough.

I find it rather logical, especially as the other weapons of the ship are so scarce (two old style phaser arrays, one torpedo launcher).

And by the way: If pulse phasers on ships other than the Defiant are so much uncanon, than you better get your demand sent at the FO team to remove pulse phasers from all other ships in FO.

the achilles class has also pulse weapons and it is more or less official. i like discovery class design it looks well thought of, especially diagram is well made. to put pulse phasers on it isn't wrong -> you also can do that in sfc 3 when customizing your vessel. also there are a lot federation vessels that look quite the same like all uss enterprise have a similar design although all are different classes it's like evolution in ship design, they take old designs and rebuild them with new technology. it's just like building cars.

I like the animated gifs. The Ship is actually pretty cool design. Should find a way to port it to Armada and have it as a seperate DL. I know I'd add it to my mini-mod. I like taking different ships and playing around with em. It's always fun to see fans find themselves a happy point with thier own designs. If it's made for either Armada Game Know I'd like the link to nab it!

yep, now they do look like pulse phasers  cheesy
yep, the discovery is a good design with a nice background. I like the design because it looks like a typical TNG era starship (the later starships look so.. fragile Smiley ) and i like the TNG era
