Title: ship registries ? and sod
Post by: Meredith on April 27, 2008, 07:47:50 AM
would it be possible to make a ship registry be added on to a ship useing the odf file?
so you have ship names say "bob" "jo" "frank" and "jacob" when you build the ship it picks from one of those names and then on the sod (model) it adds the name bob so the ship in a certain place where ever the name goes. and if possible have a reg number as well as the name but that would be harder to have 2 things. remember to ask questions if you dont get it

tnx MER

that would involve a lot of programming and dynamic texture generation. its not possible with the current state of armada2 or the patch project

Yeah, it is a nice idea, I like it, but like he said, not possible.

actually, this idea is on our idea list like forever (that means for years now ;)) and realization would be very hard. this idea still floats through my mind from time to time. so maybe someday ;)

maybe if you look at the way ST legacy has done it you may get some ideas.

star trek legacy can do it because the graphic engine is different from the armada one...

for doca to do this he would either need to reverse engineer armada and some how enforce a new graphic engine that he has some how obtained or created... or he would have to make his loader do some really amazing tricks...

its just one of those things where it aint worth because how often are you going to be that zoomed in to really notice it...

The engine is basically armada 2 engine. Legacy was built on top of armada 2.

no your wrong... The graphic part is not armada at all! its a completely new graphic engine from Armada, if you look at original press releases your know this!

Its ODF system is even made obsolete by XML... not much of Armada actually remains in Legacy and i can tell you now 100% the graphic part of Legacy is completely different from Armada's stopping what your asking for!

Bus what about this? I am confused..

by things like this.

Star Trek: Armada 2, Star Trek: Armada 2 Downloads - Scripting tools for Legacy released (http://armada2.filefront.com/news/;34757)

well that shows you don't read... it says it may work with Armada 2, if you take your time to read the very few comments posted your see its been confirmed it doesn't work with Armada in anyway... so no confusion to be had.

Well... it sorta says that: the comments state that a lot of the code needs to be written for it to work (like directories) in order for it to install correctly and be used. So both of you are right... sort of.  :whistling:

yea, thats what it needs to do to accomplish ship registries. i do have ideas how to implement that. i am thinking of creating a new sod material just for ship registries which are later then loaded dynamically for each vessel from a hand-made texture file with a lot of registries in it. sure, autogenerated ship registries would work too, but i suppose that wouldn't look to good later

legacys source code is clearly based on armada 2, i have seen it with my own eyes, alot functions from armada 2 can be found within the legacy executable and are often identical and unmodified from armada 2 but alot of code was added, alot of junk code from armada 2 is unused in legacy and of course a lot of code was rewritten. the sdk for legacy is in the current form absolutely useless for armada 2. i think it is useless to try to modify the legacy sdk to work with armada 2 (also for me). to have an reliable armada 2 mission sdk it needs to be coded from the ground up. i hope armada 2 isn't too old then when i can start to do that. writing an an mission sdk is actually a lot easier to do than the ship registry thing as i already do have made all tools that are needed, but would take a lot of more time.

what about naming your ships after they are build?
(not that it will fix any dynamic texture)
it would be fun if you check back into your admiral log and see your own ship names come back.
