Title: Fire for Effect Post by: Optec on February 28, 2008, 02:20:29 PM In the last month many doubts appeared in the community concerning the Armada2 engine. The engine - an improved version of the decade-old Battlezone engine - is of course far behind her best days. Thats why we spend much effort in improving the quality of the engine. Many new eye candy features will be presented in Fleet Operations 3.0 unseen in the community till now. That includes enhanced shaders for starships as you already saw in the great visible detail of past screenshots.
Another very important improvement was made to all effects in the game. Besides dynamic point-light sources you will find a lot of new graphical material. Here are some pictures from old special abilities in a new look. Its always hard to present an animated special effect in a screenshot, but you will get an impression on what the engine will be able to. Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Smoerebroed on February 28, 2008, 04:13:45 PM the engine is based of battlezone - o0? I thought I had saw some weird comments inside the AI scripts hinting to some civ game o0
Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Dr. Lazarus on February 28, 2008, 04:19:01 PM In terms of graphics, the original A2 is starting to look like the original Super Mario Brothers 1.
Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: ewm90 on February 28, 2008, 05:15:41 PM O my god I think I am in love!
I have all wase knowest that beem weponds end with a very square end. If it posabule to put a Fire Effect at the point of contact at the end of the beem. Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Atlantis on February 28, 2008, 05:27:40 PM the engine is based of battlezone - o0? I thought I had saw some weird comments inside the AI scripts hinting to some civ game o0 Yes, A1 was based on the Battlezone engine. If you look in A2's odf/other folder you'll still find some of the old files, referring to it. in fact, look at this, odf/other/asteroid.odf Code: [GameObjectClass] baseName = "sscr_1" classLabel = "scrap" scrapCost = 0 scrapValue = 1 maxHealth = 100 maxAmmo = 0 unitName = "Asteroid" heatSignature = 0.02 imageSignature = 0.02 radarSignature = 0.01 Heat Signature, Scrap Value, Ammo... Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Dominus_Noctis on February 28, 2008, 07:34:15 PM Sooo impressive... must... have... v3!! :sweatdrop:
I agree with Ewm that it would be nice to have some effects at the tip of phasers; they have always looked a little blunt when striking the shield or ship... possible, if it was possible, the beam could look "rounder" at the end... or have a spreading effect just as it touches the "object" to make it look more as if the energy is spreading? Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: auxilio ab alto on February 28, 2008, 08:10:03 PM I gotta wonder, would a beam weapon even have a tip on the end? Or would it just be flat. I don't know much about particle physics and stuff like that, but I was just thinking that if a beam was emitted, it would be emitted evenly over the area it was being projected into... I don't know if u could make it pointed. Also, what would be the point of having it pointed? I mean, apart from being aesthetically pleasing?
Just some thoughts. Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Dominus_Noctis on February 28, 2008, 08:23:49 PM I misspoke
What I meant was that the beam looks a little too 2D currently... it would be nicer if it hit the shield dead on, rather than obliquely (the beam never looks like it lines up with the shield (or ship) correctly, parts of it even are "through" the bubble, whereas other parts are not connecting at all). Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Meredith on February 29, 2008, 02:18:03 AM yes I have always noticed that as well
one other thing when you destroy a ship with phasers right after the ship is dead for like 1-5 milliseconds the phasers keep firing and go across the whole map and it bugs me I dont know if this is fixable but it would be nice Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Jan on February 29, 2008, 04:50:59 AM Plasma Coil - one word: Momomomonsterkill!!!!!
Guys... you are stunning. This looks impressive. Thanks for the footage. :) Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: ColdDarkParanoia on February 29, 2008, 08:46:50 PM HOW DID YOU DO IT!!! THATS AMAZING, new life for A2 :)

Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: RedShirt on March 11, 2008, 02:38:52 PM In 3 years, I have yet to see the FO team do something that isn't incredible. That would be the upside. The downside would be the whole '3 years' part.
Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: serpicus on March 11, 2008, 04:49:31 PM great work guys.
Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: AtiK on March 12, 2008, 08:05:03 AM As always, absolutely stellar work. I'm looking forward to V3's release date...which I believe is currently set a month or two after Duke Nukem Forever comes out... :ermm:
pretty pictures amount to pretty pictures and a master piece is worth exactly the paper its painted on when it never sees the light of day.. :( Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Azraael on March 12, 2008, 02:06:32 PM this is really stunning. Hope to see more

Probably been done over 9000 times before now, of course. Okay, no more memes for me. Seriously, though these effects are beautiful and make me wish I had a better computer. That's the nice thing about long waits for games: plenty of time to upgrade. Oh, and apparently Duke Nukem Forever is going to come out... eventually, even now. That's a fairly recent piece of game-stuff I edited there. Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: voyager2001dl on March 31, 2008, 10:07:28 PM Great work guys.
I was just looking around the site a bit, as I havent been here in awhile and noticed something. Are there really only 5 of you working in spare time???????? Didnt there use to be more? In any case its no wonder this project is taking so long. If you look at the credits of other games, they take half an hour or more to roll and they still take a year or three to produce. Not that I like waiting, but I can understand how a project of this size could take awhile. Thanks for all the hard work, Cant wait for V3 Full release. Maybe by christmas 08? Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Section32 on April 22, 2008, 02:34:39 PM Great Work!
The best Mod for Armada 2! You guys need help from other modders to finish this project. Maybe you guys make a application Site or ask people on Armada2 Files. Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: Dominus_Noctis on April 22, 2008, 09:55:38 PM FO will never be finished, it will live on forever!!! :sweatdrop:
Yeah, I know what you meant, but I doubt many people would be qualified to help. Title: Re: Fire for Effect Post by: auxilio ab alto on April 26, 2008, 03:24:33 AM Something that i've noticed is that the people that are a part of the actual modding team are an incredibly mature, wise, and knowledgable group. I doubt that they would be able to find many other people that are going to be able to have the right qualities that they are looking for. There may be a few out there, but we should be thankful that we have such a gifted group of individuals that are willing to spend their spare time modding a game that went out of style....several years ago. Thanks FO team!
That was my little tribute to you.
