Title: Nitpicking. Post by: Rhaz on December 09, 2007, 01:51:44 AM I rarely make threads. But today I decided to make one, to pose all my tiny issues with the current FO. I would just like to remind everyone that this mods goodness overrules any faults I might perceive =). Ship names and Registries: I personally have started to notice that starships (Primarily Federation Ships) exist in the game with the same name on a different class. E.G. I have an Akira, Monsoon and Remore class U.S.S. Washington. (The only example I still have in Admirals Log) at exactly the same instant in time in my 40 ship Armada. Now, this lead me to assume that every ship uses the same names database versus stock where each class had a range of names. I'm sure this problem persists for the Klingons and Romulans as well. For the Dominion, it is a moot point, since their names 'N Ship, N Fleet' work good in any situation. Admirals Log itself: (I know this has been brought up before) With regards to 'battles' and 'Time line'. And occasionally ship effectiveness numbers in excess of 100000. Lol. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dominus_Noctis on December 09, 2007, 02:14:13 AM Yup, I second this... perhaps someone could check stations as well?
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Cpt Ryan on December 14, 2007, 11:49:43 AM the admirals log thing is a stock A2 bug, that has simply been carried over to FO. I not sure if much, if anything, can be done about that.
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: ewm90 on December 15, 2007, 07:22:08 AM Thats a good observation.
I had not knottiest it before. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Optec on December 15, 2007, 11:26:55 AM It is on the Todo List, but as a very low-priority item. the game itself comes first ;)
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: RedShirt on December 17, 2007, 04:47:45 AM As I recall, a low-priority list of ship names is in the works. For a couple years.
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: DOCa Cola on December 23, 2007, 12:25:03 PM the admirals log is fixable, but it's a plenty of work ... so the game comes first, then the stuff around it...
about the vessel names. if someone likes to compile a unique list of names with atleast 25 names for every single shipclass that is in fleet operations, feel free to do so and send them to me ;) Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Rhaz on December 23, 2007, 09:42:26 PM I will definitely do that! What format would you like them in and how would you like to receive them?
(And do I need to make a separate set for each avatar? or just for each type of ship?) Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Optec on December 24, 2007, 02:34:07 PM for each ship please :)
bit i fear 25 is a bit low, imagine 4 federation players building 6 saberes each (thats nothing to unusual) would end up wit a total of 24 names spent. arround 100 names would be more the way to go :) thats why we fused the name lists into one Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Mortographer on December 24, 2007, 04:09:31 PM I think Startrek-online.net has a huge ship database, might make compiling the list easier.
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Rhaz on December 25, 2007, 01:08:23 AM Alright, almost got my 100 names for the Sabre Class Done =). I'm thinking of only doing 50 names for each of the Warp-in ships though.
-Edit Sabre and Monsoon done! Can someone post a name of all the Federation ships for easy reference? :( Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dominus_Noctis on December 25, 2007, 01:37:25 AM Well done Rhaz!
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Rhaz on December 25, 2007, 02:01:19 AM THANKS! <3
Optec is right, names are harder and harder to find as one goes. So Far. Intrepid 100/100 names. Sabre 100/100 names. Monsoon 100/100 names. Canaveral 50/50 names. Akira 10/100 names. I've decided to do 50 names for rare ships. (Avatar, Warp-in, Construction, Newton, Canaveral and Scout) 100 Names for Combat ships and Miners. (Sabre, Monsoon, Intrepid, Akira, Excelsior II, Sovereign, Remore (Rare, but gaining popularity) and Defiant). Title: Re: Nitpicking. USS estallo spanish for flare. USS kyoto Japanese a location. USS Frieden well you know. USS Veilig dutch for safety. A few new ones. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Optec on December 25, 2007, 09:45:03 PM Looking forward to the names :)

Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Triarii on January 12, 2008, 05:13:07 PM Here are some 'big ship' names (I think they could be used for Sovereigns and Descents primarily):
1: USS Hera 2: USS Ranger 3: USS Monitor 4: USS Paris 5: USS London 6: USS Farragut 7: USS Star Union 8: USS Federation 9: USS Wanderer 10: USS Traveler 11: USS Leviathan 12: USS Gigantic 13: USS Andromeda 14: USS Antares 15: USS Star League 16: USS Milky Way 17: USS Universe 18: USS Sydney 19: USS Essex 20: USS Athena Here are some more 'big ship' names that Rhaz already used, but I think would be better on larger ships than the ones he posted: 1: USS Majestic 2: USS Titan or Titanic 3: USS Mars 4: USS Olympia, Olympus or Olympic (though this name might be good for a construction ship too) Here are some 'heavy cruiser' names (for the Nebula and Excelsior-II): 1: USS Hecate 2: USS Agincourt 3: USS Torino 4: USS Beijing 5: USS Oxford 6: USS Melbourne 7: USS Rome 8: USS Adelaide 9: USS Brisbane 10: USS Seattle 11: USS Perth 12: USS Everest 13: USS Moscow 14: USS Leipzig 15: USS Hastings Some Avalon class names: 1: USS Sparta 2: USS Tikal 3: USS Bristol 4: USS Cyrus 5: USS Babylon 6: USS Mexico City 7: USS Reliant 8: USS America 9: USS Europe 10: USS Asia 11: USS Australia 12: USS Antartica 13: USS Africa 14: USS Tokyo 15: USS Canberra Some Defiant class names: 1: USS Paladin 2: USS Crusader 3: USS Wasp 4: USS Halberd Some Phalanx class names: 1: USS Providence 2: USS Malestrom 3: USS Troy 4: USS Dreadnought 5: USS Atomos 6: USS Ganymede 7: USS Triton 8: USS Charon 9: USS Nix 10: USS Hydra Some Galaxy class names: 1: USS Cook 2: USS Liberty And some Steamrunner class names: 1: USS Uluru (not USS Ares Rock!!!) 2: USS Kosciusko 3: USS Ballista 4: USS Trebuchet 5: USS Crossbow 6: USS Gladius 7: USS Legionary 8: USS Hobart 9: USS Launceston 10: USS Cairns 11: USS Broome 12: USS Pascal 13: USS Venus 14: USS Bass 15: USS Flinders I apologise if I used some names that Rahz already used. At first I was searching each name to make sure he hadn't but after I while I couldn't be bothered anymore... :sweatdrop: I also apologise if the lists are slightly Australia-centric... :sweatdrop: One more thing, I propose that, to make our lives easier, maybe Venture class ships (which are really jsut tiny scout shuttles) shouldn't get their own names. I know runabouts got their own names, but I'd rather save names like Venture, Halifax, Piccadilly, Crusoe and Columbus for the larger ships (I think those last two would make good names for Miranda-II class ships). Maybe they shouldn't just be called 'scout unit X' or something... I'll have some more names soon... Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dr. Lazarus on January 12, 2008, 06:17:35 PM I'm particularly fond of the USS Lazarus. I hope they program it to have lots of torpedoes.
Here are some further suggestions, probably best suited to very large vessels: USS Faberge Egg USS Discombobulation USS Beaver-Fever USS Bamboozle USS Dubloons USS Frick USS Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia USS G-Dammit USS Badonkadonk USS Shmegegi USS Noodle Soup USS Pantywaist USS Gongoozler USS Turd Burglar USS Bartman USS Bush USS Glibido USS Tasty Wheat USS Kidney USS Cavity USS Whizbang USS Metamorphosis USS Kittywompus. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Triarii on January 12, 2008, 06:31:46 PM And lest we forget...
USS Poland Do I win? Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dominus_Noctis on January 12, 2008, 08:04:01 PM USS GreatWork
:sweatdrop: Nice going :D If I had been less lazy I would have joined in too :whistling: Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Rhaz on January 12, 2008, 08:55:24 PM Now, how are we gonna organize the ones I made that weren't BS and everyone elses? I can spew out names if you can pick what ship they go with ;).
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dominus_Noctis on January 12, 2008, 09:14:59 PM Hmmm, maybe Doca could create a thread that has specific ways of organizing and adding this data ... such as a column for Sabres, a column for Sovereigns.... you get the idea ^-^

Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: RedShirt on January 18, 2008, 04:38:31 AM USS Josef Mengele?! You do know who he was, right? :ermm:
Anyways, I'll give you a teaser of some of my (serious non-joking) names. So far I have the Descent, Avalon, Excelsior II, Canaveral, and Venture lists done. Pick one and I'll share it. -update- Norway's done, Phalanx is on the way. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Triarii on January 18, 2008, 05:10:50 AM Quote USS Josef Mengele?! You do know who he was, right? Well, it makes about as much sense as the canon USS Cortez... :pinch: Well, I guess we'll start with the Descent list... Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Smoerebroed on January 18, 2008, 04:45:26 PM comparing Mengele with Cortez is very thin ice. I'm aware that Cortez was the doombringer to the aztec empire; also note that asking Aunt Wikipedia about "Cortez" yields more than one result for famous person. It could be that poet too :p
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Triarii on January 18, 2008, 05:06:14 PM Quote comparing Mengele with Cortez is very thin ice. I never said there was any comparison... I just meant that Rhaz inlcuding that guy in his list (which is my no means set in stone let me remind you) made about as much sense as an actual Star Trek author calling a canon ship Cortez, presumably after the conquistador and not someone else... That's what I was getting at... People don't seem to know how to name Trek ships... :sweatdrop: Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: RedShirt on January 19, 2008, 12:54:50 AM Well, Cortez was a military man, not a sick bastard conducting horrible "experiments" on women and children in the name of "science"...
I doubt Starfleet would even name a garbage scow after him. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Triarii on January 19, 2008, 02:51:40 AM I never said they would... :pinch:
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: RedShirt on January 19, 2008, 03:18:23 AM In an ironic twist, I never said you said they would, I simply pointed out a fact.
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dr. Lazarus on January 19, 2008, 03:05:59 PM I've always been a fan of themes, such as river names for Runabouts. You should be able to tell what class of ship it (might) be from its name. For example, I think that the naming of Nebula class ships after scientists started as far back as A1. I dont think its quite that strict in canon, but there's nothing to stop us trying it for some classes.

USS Commonwealth USS S. Hawking (though in the Star Trek timeline he may have gotten mixed up in the ugenics wars, which would probably make him a bad choice to name a ship after) USS R. Dawkins (though, again, in the Star Trek timeline he may have been invovled in the ugenics wars, which would probably make him a bad choice) USS Magna Carta (given that it was such a pivotal document) USS Oxford (this has long been one of my favorite names for a Nebula class) USS Cambridge USS Shakespeare USS A. Post by: Dr. Lazarus on January 22, 2008, 03:02:35 PM Yeah you're right, many of them do fit in with the way Starfleet ships are usually named, and it's probably no surprise that the suitable ones would be the names of prominent people, since it seems to be a common way of naming a ship, e.g. the modern Nimitz class aircraft carriers are named after US presidents (I think, except for the Enterprise of course, that's named after... I'm not sure what it's named after!).

I'm not sure what it's named after!). Enterprise ain't a Nimitz. That explains the discrepancy. *update* Upon checking, it's actually Enterprise-class, a one-off design. And its name is continuing the lineage of at least six ships in the past, when names were chosen more arbitrarily. Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Triarii on January 23, 2008, 08:52:16 AM Also, the definition (or, at least, one definition) of "Enterprise" is "a purposeful or industrious undertaking", putting "Enterprise" in the same league as names like "Endeavour" or "Illustrious"...
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Atlantis on January 23, 2008, 03:20:20 PM Ships have never been named "arbitrarily". A lot of thought has always gone into such things, until recently. Names like Enterprise are very traditional, where the name is based on ideals, including Enterprise, Victory, Endeavour, Hope... Some such names have fallen out of use, but others, like Enterprise, are still there.
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: serpicus on January 23, 2008, 09:29:33 PM Yep. Enterprise. Long live Capitalism!
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dr. Lazarus on January 23, 2008, 10:17:46 PM I'll second that. Even though at this rate we're gonna end up with our own Ferengi Alliance by the 24th century. ^-^
Posted on: January 23, 2008, 10:14:17 pm Maybe we shouldn't dismiss the idea! Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: Dominus_Noctis on January 24, 2008, 01:53:30 AM The 34th rule of aquisition.... :D
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: RedShirt on January 24, 2008, 05:08:24 AM "Arbitrarily" as in less confined by strict naming schemes (i.e. presidents of the united states, words starting with certain letters, species of fish...). I wasn't implying that ships were named without reason.
Title: Re: Nitpicking. Post by: T-Man on January 30, 2008, 04:35:53 PM I always assumed they built ships in batches, and ships in the same batch would have similar names (so one batch will be named after capitals, then the next after countries, a third after states/provinces etc)
A couple of ideas: Surya <- I've heard somewhere that its Sanskrit for "Sun" Zedong <- I've always felt the federation has a slight communist feel to it, so it might work, and it would be nice to see some famous non-western names and themes in the game (the federation is meant to be a worldwide alliance after all, right?). Liberator Endearing Protector Patreaus <- American General Abrams <- American General Harbhajan <- Famous Sikh warrior Indefatigable <- Old British ship name. Means "untiring". Highlander <- old scottish warriors (and some crazy dude with a sword ) Immortal <- Ancient Persian elites Sparta Spartan Leonidas Samurai Shinto Men-Shen <- An ancient Chinese protective demon Oni <- Japanese word for demon Tengu <- Type of Japanese demon Kitsune <- Another type of Japan demon Shogun <- would be great for a capital ship Katana <- Japanese sword Wakizashi <- another japanese sword Tanto <- ...and another... Komodo <- big Aisian lizard thing Guess what inspired these ones ... Autumn Amber Dawn Warthog Scorpion Mongoose Ghost Wraith Scarab A couple of ideas from Freespace 2, a game i'm a big fan of; Myrmidon Hercules Pegasus Perseus Erinyes Deimos Fenris Leviathan Aeolus Orion Hecate Arcadia Watchdog Cerberus Aslator Poseidon Chronos Triton Aquitaine Galatea Bastion Carthage Rapier Explorer Terra Xerxes Talos Hope those help ya Title: Re: Nitpicking.
