Title: Question On Some Ships
Post by: tyrkina on September 30, 2003, 11:53:22 AM
i cant remember if these questions where asked so i thout i would.

Is the galaxie class buildable or is it a special.(i hope its buildable and a dreadnaught is the special)

Is the defiant class gonna be as worthless as it was in the original A2( easily destroyed by say a voyager class ship)

can the federation ships do the shotgun torpedo attack( cant remember the episodes but they launched up to 10 torps at one shot)

other than that the screen shots look great and i can barly wait for the mod :)

the galaxy class is not buildable (hey, this class is veeery old, so starfleet won't build new ones if they have the sovereign as a successor), but you can warp in galaxy class starships for your credits.

the defiant class is a short-range battle cruiser, not the weak destroyer it is in armada2

quantum torpedo launchers can fire up to 4 torpedos in a very fast rate but then continue with the normal fire rate. The Federation Sovereign, Excelsior-II and Descent Class ships have Quantum torpedo launchers

btw, all the things above are also implemented in beta1.1 and won't chang in beta2 :)

hehe, no :) the 4 warp nacells are necesarry to build up a symetric warp field around the ship

o ok then?? err whats the differnce between a shield and a warp field???

a warp field is required to travel, and a shield-field ist required to protect the ship :)
i don't no the exact physical differences between them (think the warp field is a quantum field and the shield field is a EM field.. but i'm not sure)

The Warp field is a special kind of subspace field, the deflector shield is a kind of force field.

Here is what the Technical Manual says about shields (losely translated because I didn't buy the English version):

"As most forcefield devices, the deflector system generates a zone of highly focussed spacial distortion in which a energyful graviton field is sustained.

The deflector field itself is emitted and formed by a series of transmission grids on the hull of the spacecraft. This generates a field that fits closely to the shape of the spacecraft. This field is very resistant to all kinds of hits by diverse materials, from relativistic subatomic particals to massive objects with lower relativistic speeds.

When such a distortion takes place, the field energy will be concentrated on the point where it hit and thus generates a local space distortion. It seemes to the observer as if the object would bounce off from the shield. A null-dimensional observer on the object itself would assume his path of flight as unchanged while the spacecraft had suddenly changed its position.

[...]

The deflector is also effective against many electromagnetic, nuclear and other emitted or field-like energies."

The first paragraph answers most of the question, the rest is rather additional information.
