Title: Hold your ground! Post by: Optec on April 12, 2007, 08:00:39 PM Hi there :)
Todays newspost is about a larger change of the possibilities to defend your bases in v3. We took a closer look to how defence stations, platforms and turrets worked in the PR and decided to give them a little more depth. Therefore most races got a redo of their turrets with individual changes. The Federation, for example, does now construct a basic Platform instead of turrets or sensor stations. This Platform does then contain mutliple construction options to be extended into a Defence Platform or a Sensor Station. A new "Phaser Platform", a early-game medium range turret made it into the game this way, too. (http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/3958/foscreenshot07041220503nj7.th.png) (http://img108.imageshack.us/my.php?image=foscreenshot07041220503nj7.png) "You have entered Federation space!" Other races will of course feature different turret systems. Romulan turrets may now cloak, making the Cloaking Generator a little more attractive and Klingon have been sighted to put more and more armor plates on their stations. Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Krael on April 12, 2007, 08:15:44 PM Nice idea, but will you be able to build it instantly to a certain upgrade, because it tents to be annoying if you build a lot of turrets and you have to upgrade them all. Off course you had too build a prototype first.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 12, 2007, 08:43:14 PM Wow. This looks good.
However, Krael has a point. Won't it be a bit annoying to upgrade? You have to keep in mind that the player is busy mircoing as well. :sweatdrop: Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RFO-M.J.Pulaskee on April 12, 2007, 09:21:23 PM that sounds great. and yeah i to have to agree resurching the new options would stink. but if they were tied to something else. like you get photon turrets at level two weapons.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Overlord/Zeich on April 12, 2007, 10:03:53 PM Looks great. I too worry a bit about having to go through each turret as I build turrets and then upgrade them. I hope the upgrade is either instanteous, or the build times have been balanced so that it works out. But I'm sure you guys have already looked into this in terms of balancing.
And btw, I like the light blue behind the wireframe image. Gives it a nice look to it. Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Mortographer on April 12, 2007, 10:41:12 PM Maybe upgrades for turrets will cost enough that you're only likely to upgrade a few every once in a while.
Oh, and why would long build times make things more difficult? You still just click on a button when you want to upgrade either way. Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: T-Man on April 12, 2007, 11:18:23 PM Sounds like a neat idea. Fed sorta reminds me of the component towers off of Tiberian sun (ah the memories ^-^). I'm guessing Admrail Mayson will have an additional "Torpedo turret" upgrade option instead of the old standalone turret. I certainly look foward to seeing them have more of a role; i couldn't help but think they were too weak in 3PR (they even struggled with the basic destroyers).
Out of interest, will the Borg have an Auto Assimilator or Holding Beam turret? Krael did make a very good point though; it might be annoying for a Fed player to have to go back and upgrade the turrets one by one while everyone else can just tell it to build and then leave it. I don't know what to suggest except maybe making the pulse phaser turret the basic platform, and then having the upgrades replace that instead of a basic platform. Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 12, 2007, 11:23:18 PM Is there a way to be able to select more than one turret and upgrade it?
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RFO-M.J.Pulaskee on April 12, 2007, 11:31:51 PM Kinda like the romulan ships? i bet there could be.
i like t-mans idea, a basic setting at first. Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 12, 2007, 11:40:06 PM Yeah, like the Romulan ships. And many other kinds of turrets in many other games.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: ewm90 on April 13, 2007, 01:00:15 AM Looks cool. With thare be a new station with mixed tech?

Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RFO-M.J.Pulaskee on April 13, 2007, 01:12:56 AM lol i need'em, got bills to pay and the internet is oh so much faster, and the hole need computer parts some times.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 13, 2007, 01:16:34 AM Haven't moved out quite yet, but when I do I'm sure that the internet will come in quite handy.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Optec on April 13, 2007, 05:53:11 AM Yep, turrets can now be selected similar to normal vessels (a doubleclick for example selects all visible platforms allowing you to upgrade them all with one click :)
Admiral Maysons Torpedo Platform is now an upgradeoption, too. The Torpedo Platform got a little more powerful for v3 :) Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: warp on April 13, 2007, 10:11:03 AM mean you outside also is changes?
or it only the strength of the torpedo platform?---edit--- I have missed the train. about the post : Hold your ground is there now three torpedo platform?? Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 13, 2007, 03:10:38 PM Yep, turrets can now be selected similar to normal vessels (a doubleclick for example selects all visible platforms allowing you to upgrade them all with one click :) Admiral Maysons Torpedo Platform is now an upgradeoption, too. The Torpedo Platform got a little more powerful for v3 :) Will it select WITH normal vessels? I don't think anyone wants to select a group and then come up with 11 ships... and 5 turrets. Having to ctrl-click them out would not be fun. Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: DOCa Cola on April 13, 2007, 03:14:39 PM double clicking on a vessel selects all vessels on screen of that type
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 13, 2007, 03:27:02 PM I mean the click-and-drag method. Would they be selected as well as ships?
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Optec on April 13, 2007, 05:26:06 PM Yep ^-^
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 13, 2007, 05:30:42 PM Is there any way to avoid that? I have no intention of sending my turrets into the enemy base, so I can see potential problems with the selectability.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Optec on April 13, 2007, 08:27:25 PM i will have a look at it :)
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 13, 2007, 08:32:29 PM Thanks, Optec. :D
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Admiral Adama on April 13, 2007, 09:24:05 PM i like the auto assimilator turret idea
but it has to have more than that, plasma cannons too Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 13, 2007, 09:47:01 PM Maybe an avatar bonus?
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Sugar Spice on April 14, 2007, 05:32:50 PM Turrets looking good Optec!
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Smoerebroed on April 15, 2007, 01:16:48 AM i'll stick to my build ships instead of turrets tactic; map control and building up pressure is more important than anything else.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: RedShirt on April 15, 2007, 01:23:41 AM Aye, just avoid leaving your base open to ambushes.
Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: James Zolar on April 15, 2007, 10:41:29 AM Really taking modular technologies to the next level aren't cha'. :D Do you think this maybe expanded upon? For an example the nebula swaping its science gear for extra weapons, or something like "modify ship with extra phasers". Perhaps you could let NPC buildings mod ships. For an example a romulan goes to an Hirogen facility and that facility can refit the ship with hunting sensors. Of this seems like alot there could be an "Advanced Game" option.
Thanks For Reading Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Smoerebroed on April 15, 2007, 04:36:11 PM Aye, just avoid leaving your base open to ambushes. well for that i have scouts/sensors and a defending array of ships; and if i hit him first and take out his starbase or research stuff - ouchie; Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: Admiral Adama on April 15, 2007, 04:37:48 PM advanced game option means 1000 more days until v3 release

Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: nefrance on July 21, 2007, 02:55:47 AM Very Good Idea, but I'm not sure if a Romulan Turret can cloak? I've never seen a Romulan turret cloak before. I don't think it's possible for any station to cloak.
What would be the borg turret? :borg: Title: Re: Hold your ground! Post by: MutantHippie on July 21, 2007, 03:00:47 AM Borg nanoprobe launcher :borg:
