I thought this was pretty interesting, if it passes they're going to have to reprint a lot of science books... What do you guys think? ~ The Mormon Jedi Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on August 17, 2006, 10:35:37 PM lol for me it's hardly news, but i'm in to this stuff, with out even clicking on the link i know we could have up to 53 planets in the system, theres three being made into plutains or something like that and one of the is called ub 441 2003 or something.
thats with out even clicking on the link :D Title: New Planets? Post by: JediMormon on August 17, 2006, 10:41:35 PM Nice.
Fifty-three planets would not be fun for the kids who have to memorize all of their names and positions for science class... Title: New Planets? Post by: Acidpunk on August 18, 2006, 01:33:15 PM its just stupid because they want to define every object in the damned belt a planet
Title: New Planets? Post by: hypercube on August 18, 2006, 01:39:03 PM it's not stupid, it's science, the more we know the better, what if plato or archimedes said it's stupid some 2293 years ago? what if einsteid said **** it and became a shoe sailsman or something :P it's a good discovery, admit it!
Title: New Planets? Post by: -=B!G=-The Black Baron on August 18, 2006, 01:46:50 PM I must admit, they are taking all these little "rocks" way too seriously. The number of planets we have now is ok, others are just too damn small to be considered planets. It would be ok tho, if they just named them different and then there can be 5m for all I care ;)
Title: New Planets? Post by: Acidpunk on August 19, 2006, 12:44:09 PM yeah but thats what i mean the kupier belt or however the **** you spell it
ever since Pluto they have been trying to name everything in that belt a planet thats what i see as stupid they should just be defined as asteroids or something not planets Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on August 19, 2006, 05:48:52 PM some of them are bigger, such as ub 2003 41 or what ever it's called
Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on August 21, 2006, 07:43:34 AM the problem with this, that our beloved Scientists don't know what a Planet is exactly or their is no proper definition what a planet is exactly; hehe oh and now we have a "double/twin/whatever planet special feature in our solar system since Charon, formerly known as the moon of pluto is now its own planet; yippe-ka-yeah mothercuk<bleep>
Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on August 21, 2006, 08:15:33 PM there is a defianation now, it is basicly anything thats gravity has made it in to a sphere like shape, is not orbiting a planet, is not a star, and is orbiting a star, if it fits into all three of them it is a planet
Title: New Planets? Post by: Nivek on August 21, 2006, 10:26:19 PM now that makes no sence "and is orbiting a star" what happens if the sun has long sence died and doesnt have enough force to hold the planet and it just goes away. Wouldnt still be a planet just dead?
Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on August 21, 2006, 10:28:00 PM no it'll proberley just be a huge arse astroid, or a huge arse gas ball in space
Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on August 25, 2006, 07:45:00 AM according to my favourite left *** newspaper pluto isn't a "planet" anymore!
Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on August 25, 2006, 05:42:33 PM nope :S
Title: New Planets? Post by: hypercube on August 25, 2006, 05:51:09 PM so what the hell is it? an asteroid or have they just named it something like micro or small/midget planet?
Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on August 25, 2006, 06:22:49 PM well ..ah.. so yes they are called midget/dwarfen planets right now (but they are no planets anymore), because unlike "real" planets they didn't sucked up all galactic dust aroung them; so Pluto , Xena and Gabriel are midget planets now; hehe i'm waiting for the first sarcastic comment here
Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on August 26, 2006, 12:29:24 AM dwarf planet
Title: New Planets? Post by: hypercube on August 26, 2006, 11:20:51 PM the complications people create for one another.
Title: New Planets? Post by: RFO Cairo1 on August 28, 2006, 03:29:54 PM well on the classaifacation thing, what would you call those moons around juipter. ya know the ones bigger then earth id call those planets if you asked me. Td call a planet anny round rotating body that orbits a star. if it aint round it aint a planed
thats my 2 cents Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on August 28, 2006, 07:28:42 PM hmm moons bigger than earth? Really which one?
And to answer your question, this are still moons since they are orbiting a planet and not the sun; for example; so they didn't got caught by the gravity of the sun, instead they got caught by a planet (jupiter and Saturn are both called brown giants if i'm right, which means that if they would be bigger they would have been become stars) Title: New Planets? Post by: RedShirt on August 30, 2006, 02:32:56 AM I'm not sure if they're brown giants... looking up now.
Can't find anything anywhere referencing "brown giants". Closest thing happens to be David Brown. Title: New Planets? Post by: SHO260 on August 30, 2006, 05:27:46 AM Actually Jupiter and Saturn are called gas giants because of 98 percent of there mass is comprised of a compresed (but relitively low density) helium/hydrogen molecular layer with a thick liquid metalic hydrogen mantel and a small solid rock core.
Were as Uranus and Neptune are Ise Gaints because they are comprised mostly from a very dense icey salt wate brine with a solid rock core. Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on August 30, 2006, 07:33:22 AM did i write brown giants; oh sorry i mean brown dwarfs/midgets; Oh I didn't know that about Uranus and Neptun;
Title: New Planets? Post by: RedShirt on August 30, 2006, 07:57:15 PM Wikipedia on Brown Dwarves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_dwarf)
They arn't stars, but Jupiter is still much too small to be one. Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on August 31, 2006, 08:04:47 AM yep you're right
Title: New Planets? Post by: cts006 on September 01, 2006, 06:28:44 AM A planet that no longer orbits a star is a Rouge Planet.
Kuiper belt objects are not planets. Next we are going to be saying there are millions/billions of planets in the solar system beacuse everything in the main asteroid belt is a planet. Give me a ******* break. Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on September 01, 2006, 07:47:36 AM BOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM! (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2006/30/)
DESTRUCTION! You know this was the work of Dr. Tolian Soran Title: New Planets? Post by: cts006 on September 01, 2006, 09:38:29 AM I got some Tri-Lithium, wanna try an experimnet?
Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on September 01, 2006, 12:56:43 PM how many of those romulan scumbags did you kill to get it?
and yes let's do a little experiment with it; here on earth; This rotting puny class 13 planet will explode anyway (see LEXX 4th season for better understanding) :P Title: New Planets? Post by: Eufnoc on September 01, 2006, 06:09:35 PM heh i read about that yesterday, someone looks on google news as much as me lol
Title: New Planets? Post by: Smoerebroed on September 01, 2006, 07:01:17 PM actually an online portal of a newspaper published this story
Title: New Planets? Post by: RedShirt on September 01, 2006, 10:29:41 PM They should remove Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune from the "planets" catagory because they're too big. Just to be fair to little Pluto, of course. :P
