I hope the big lag won't be so intensive in FO. I heard that a Windows protocoll is responsible for that. Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Optec on June 16, 2006, 08:16:43 PM at least in LAN (we are testing it right now ;) ) everything seems to be running fine. at least the first FO release with no crash bugs.. hopefully B)

What I said may only be true in north america, however, as companies tend to sell crap to poorer nations. For me, nothing less than XP Home (since I am at home after all). Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: ColdDarkParanoia on June 17, 2006, 10:59:32 AM i got a copy of the beta vista, i'v had it for bout six months but have bothered installing it cos it looks just like a mod for xp, i'll wait for the real vista to come out, then wait a year for most of the major bugs to get fixed. btw The xp i'v got is sp1, sp2 just seemed to screen with too many things and i find i can run more on sp1.
Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: cts006 on June 18, 2006, 05:18:34 AM So far looks like 9x support can be blown out the **** chute.
Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: DOCa Cola on June 18, 2006, 10:41:01 AM quite interesting, 2 years ago there were atleast 10% still using 9x :)
DOCa Cola Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Acidpunk on June 18, 2006, 10:49:12 AM Actually the public Beta of Vista is pretty good there arent as many bugs as u would think and ive been running it now for what 1 week with no Crashes
as for its just a mod of XP thats nuts its completely different Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: DOCa Cola on June 18, 2006, 10:52:10 AM i tried one of the older vista builds (like 2 month ago) but for my taste it used quite a lot ram after a fresh install (around 700mb) and many too much processes were already running in taskmanager..
DOCa Cola Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Lt.Cdr.White on June 18, 2006, 01:37:53 PM I think the reason why so many are now using XP is:
1. Many got new PCs. 2. There were many games that didn't run under ME or 98 anymore. I bought XP for my old comp just because of Battle for Middle-Earth. ;) Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Xylomn on June 19, 2006, 12:55:49 AM Running 1 PC XP Pro SP2 and another Vista Beta which is surprisingly stable if a little... unfinished lol. With a lot of companies now stopping support for windows 9x including driver updates and such most people have now upgraded to xp and better pc specs have also helped this. To be honest I think 9x support could be easily dropped with little or no people effected.
As for Vista being a mod of XP, do a little research first. Windows XP was basically a big patch to windows 2000. However vista is a completely new build, yes some code will have obviously be reused but the majority of it has been rewritten, the reason it may look similar to xp is coz its suppost to. If microsoft suddenly decided to completely redesign the ui get rid of the start menu and taskbar etc. the standard computer user with little/no technical knowlwdge wouldn't like it as it would be unfamiliar. To be specific its actually Windows 6.0 :P Personally I'll upgrade my gaming rig to vista on release day as I get it free from my university. Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: DOCa Cola on June 19, 2006, 10:02:34 AM yes, true 2k was quite similar to xp, but xp was the first nt kernel based os that was thought for home pc's.. that's why many skipped 2000 and took xp then i think.
the average joe will switch to vista for it's eye candy and not because of (the now i say many cut-back) 'hidden' features vista has to offer. I'm not going to switch to vista until it's final. still vista has nice features but compared to those i saw between windows 98 and windows 2000, vista not so impressive anymore. Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: ColdDarkParanoia on June 19, 2006, 01:00:06 PM Quote Also i dnt think it will be a big a jump from xp to vista as it was for most people from 98 to xp. i stand by my origanal statment that i wont get vister till it's been out for a while, so they can work out the major bugs. Cos it's almost a certanty that vister like all other window befoer it will be plaged with bugs in the early stages, (first 6 months). So if i wait a year, then hopfully even move bugs will have been fixed ;) Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? So if i wait a year, then hopfully even move bugs will have been fixed I agree with that, only reason I'm gonna upgrade gaming rig is coz of vista only titles... *beats microsoft with stick*. Gonna leave my work PC with XP Pro, works best for that and is nice and stable now. Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Tiberius on June 20, 2006, 04:08:17 AM I'm running it on XP even though I have Vista on another partition. I've found most games don't like to run well on Vista. Like Rome: Total War lags like a 56k demon on Vista but goes over nice and smooth on XP.

I removed vista pretty quick though, it wasn't working real good with some programs. Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: hypercube on June 22, 2006, 01:24:32 PM i'm gonna stay with xp for now, untill something worth mentioning comes along.

Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Intimid8er on June 22, 2006, 09:42:17 PM Unfortunately I am stuck on XP home because that is the way my computer was shipped to me. Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: DOCa Cola on June 23, 2006, 08:27:38 AM Quote I believe Vista flops... i am not so sure it does. it may be bad but there are enough people out there buying it anyway. xp could have flopped too - there were really no inventions, just a new gui and some new applications but still much like 2k. sooner or later everyone is going to have vista on their main pcsDOCa Cola Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: AdmarilRyan on June 24, 2006, 02:24:32 PM XP was very good at recovering from errors unlike the previous versions of windows. If vista improves over XP as dramatically as XP improved over the previous version (either Me or 2000, can't remember which one came first) then I would be very interested in it.
Title: Which's Your Os. 98/me/2000/xp/vista ? Post by: Fullphaser on June 24, 2006, 08:24:05 PM I'm running it in ME and minus the fact this computer is only sporting a 300something mb or ram and a 700hz processor, and a 64mb video card, its all good :P I think it is because the API calls for ME-XP were thought up by the orginal developers, or didn't change that much, haven't played online (as I am willing to bet those are where major API differences occur)
as for vista, it won't flop unfortantly :P Microsoft has gone to great lenghts to ensure that it does well.. for example only Vista will support Direct X 10 and as any gamer can tell you... without direct x you are up a creek. Also they at the same time are dropping ME and 98 from the supported OS list. and considering the way the API calls are done with this WinFS and that it is needs a x86 compatible (much like mac os) machine, the new software will probalby only be bundled with Vista, probably like the full release of IE 7 I would say that Microsoft will ensure the non beta or its upgrades will not be useable on XP, and webdesigners (who try to stay modern or are for the most part gamers who will have either no IE (on a mac) or will have the newest) won't really check to see if it breaks in IE 6 so end users will have to use the newest version of IE 7
