Title: A Great Star Trek Game
Post by: MartinCrull on July 17, 2003, 06:53:34 PM
As I was looking at Armada II, Bridge Commander, Elite Forces, and Starfleet Command 3, and I was playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and The Sims, and watching some of the Star Trek TV shows and movies, I really got thinking about what would a great Star Trek game entale?

How could it be both open ended and with great mini-stoies and missions?  I love the size of big ships, with Nemisis or WOK style battles, but also the first or third person perspective.  I love the do-whatever-works philosophy of GTA, and the inventiveness of Deus Ex.

I love the progression of someone going through Starfleet Academy, gaining in rank, and becoming a captain, and maybe even an admiral.

I even like the wandering around a space ship, possibly stopping in to hear a string quarter or play some cards on deck whatever.

Is there a way to bring this all together, not in being an epic omni-game, but more along the scale of GTA?

err i don't think there is such a game or that sort of game could be made it would take up to much room and it would be realkly hard to have a thirid person , control an armada and intracter with indavidual crew members

hm.. sime kind of gta, getting ranks, living on a spaceship.. with rpg parts of course.. and the "action missions" can be scripted missions on a romulan station or a borg cube or whatever..
i think this type of game is quite interesting and doable.. but couse you will have to script the away missions and stuff it will perhaps get boring after a while

hmm if this where online and there where like say admin people that start outas the begining adm, and cpt ect and having computer people as crew to begin than adding the rest of the players it could becom quite interesting,  since it would function like the galaxy with wars, coups,conspiracies,spys,ect. and rank building, borg atacks, than if u get promoted to adm its starts to get a lil moree like bridge commander as ur siting in the captains chair but there people late 4 duty shifts ect and than when ur an admiral u are controloing a fleet and it gets a lil more like armada, or if u become a smuggler,decide to become a criminal, or private citizen, or ne number of other crap

The Star Wars Galaxies model is a cop-out.

Stay with me here.

I can imagine a two "scale" game, person scale and spaceship scale.

Person scale would involve tricorder, phaser, and pulse rifle.

Spaceship scale would use the two button approach of firing phasers and torpedos, with appropriate recharge rates, and modified wasd - qe controls to fly in 3D.

You might be at spaceship scale when your ship got boarded, and then switch to personal scale to fight off the agressors.  And then beam on to their ship and either try to disable it or take it over.

Of after a spaceship battle at spaceship scale, go to person scale, give some orders, and then walk through the halls.  Go to sick bay or dining hall for healing, or hoodeck for increased skills.

Once you orbit a planet, you could beam down and collect supplies.

If you wanted a rebellous game, like GTA, you could call the game "Maquis," and lead that life, although I would want more conventional.

Things I wonder about:  how woud the story/environment work.  I like the feel of Starfleet Command, with a big map at your disposal, and depending on your risk tolerance and strength, decidiing how far out to go.  I also like the feel that space is pretty empty, with a few powerful ships.  I also like the ability to pick up small missions on the fly, creating a dynamic environment.

But I also like the high level organization of Aramda.  Maybe use the Armada AI for that part of the game, but you are an independent ship in the armada.  You could be told, "there will be a massive attack tomorrow, and you should be part of the fleet.  Make your way to the fleet, and then get ready for the big attack."  Or our base is being attacked, everyone who can help defend.  I like having the enemy amassing a fleet, which you could run into at the building stage, or the attacking stage.

As a ship, you should be able to issue distress calls, and/or respond to others.

There should also be a way that you as a ship are given orders, but some of the time there is "play" in terms of how long you have to succeed, so that you might explore other areas on your way.

I'm a fan of management-type games:  the resource management of Armada or the total empire management of Birth of the Federation (oldie but goodie).  I think an ideal game would be the turn-based empire-wide scale of BOTF, but with real-time battles a la Armada.  (Much like Lords of the Realm, another classic).

I could also go for a combination of Starfleet Command, Bridge Commander, maybe even Away Team.  Start off searching for missions in the SFC Dynaverse, and depending on what you find, either ship-to-ship BC combat or some planet-side AT fun.

Sort of what MartinCrull was talking about, combine a few different scales to make a more realistic game.

well freelancer is not a bad game if someone modded it you could get close to what you want. plenty of planets to get supplies from, gota make a gambling room, only problem is you wouldnt get the first person view except during mission talks with npcs. currantly there are many mods for freelancer out. i got one that adds b5 and star terck. loved kiling the enterprise with a white star :)

Some Aspects I like about the franchise and wish was seamlessly captured:

EXPERIENCES
* Wandering through the halls of the Enterprise (or whatever ship) and seeing a string quartet playing or some other cultural event, or stopping in for lucnh
* Captains and commanders - ordering around crew
* Exploring large ships, watching  crew do their work
* Invasions, planning, executing, and defending against
* Forming Alliances, having alliances fall apart
* Flying a shuttle around a large ship, against a large ship
* Commading a large ship
* Ship to ship battles

ELEMENTS
* The sheer size of the ships.
* The Klingon ships
* The Federation ships
* The Romulan ships
* Borg Cubes and maybe spheres
* Borg Drones
* Tricorders
* Phasers
* Going through the academy
* Patrols
* Emergency Medical Holograms

Maybe soon if we're lucky, they'll make a game like this once computers reach that 'next level.' We could have a ST game based perhaps on a series like Voyager, where you live on the starship, interact with crew members that posess a more-than-laughable AI, and have access to the entire ship. I mean, if you wanna research something on the LCARS system, you should be able to, and if you'd like to use a holodeck program, you should be able to do that too. People could d/ holonovels off the internet and use them with this holodeck. A really detailed ship would be nevessary. You could move through the ranks, and carry out a plethora of tasks related to those ranks. I think you get the point. The only problem is, if someone were to make such an advanced game like this, they would have to be careful and avoid making those little side missions too similar and repetitive. Overall, I think a game like this would be great...Part elite force, part bridge commander, and part starfleet academy(This is an old ST game, but it's great). The whole game would probably be first person, and there could even be shuttle missions that resemble flight simulators. Anyhoo, I've rambled enough....Until they make an awesome game like this, we'll just have to dream on... -_-

I've been playing both System Shock 2 and GTA3:VC recently.  I love the long term RPG building and decisions, as well as the really detailed, really big (albeit dead) space ship.

But I also the love "do whatever it takes" aspect of GA3:VC.

Here's a rough idea.

What if three ships, a federation, a borg, and a Species 8472 were smashed together around a singulairty.

This would provide three large ships as the setting, with "vehicles" such as space shuttles, runabouts, internal trams, maybe even an escort defiant-class ship.  These could be accessible a la GTA3.

The world would be alive, with almost armada like conflict between the three species, played out at both a large level and a personal level.  Misions could be undertaken to strenghted fronts against either Borg or Species 8472, keeping in mind that they are battling each other as well.

The game would be thrid person.  Your missions might include battling Borg or Species 8472  directly, taking over strategic facilites both defensively or offensively, or adding abilities to the Federation (or whatever side you might play) to make all of your side better.

I could imagine 400 Federation soliders, 100 Borg (that could assimilate feds), and 100 species 8472.  From there, it could go anywhere.  8472 could wipe out the Borg.  Borg could assimilate Feds.

You could plot around obvious issues, such as making you the only one who can transport, due to some techno-babble reason about an experimental serom or the fat you are an android or what-not.

There may even be a meteor field closeby for a quick jaunt to find needed chemicals.  Bringing online "medical," "the bridge," "cargo bays," "shutttle bays" etc., in any order would free up capabilities, such as view screens, monitoring, flying vehicales (protected from the singularity by a transphasic multi-tiered force shield, of course).

To clear out critters from your engineering section, you might go in with guns blazing, attack from the outside with a shuttle, take over a tangential section to allow your feds direct access.  Once you have taken it over, you might have the ability to erect cetain force-fields.

You could evolve your character, more towards being a captain (ordering other people aroud), or engineer (fixing broken things, or taking apart and reassembling pieces), or doctor (healing, or deborging) perhaps.  Or maybe just in capability, such as jumping or aiming or strenght or speed.

The game's last mission could be, after neutralizing the singulatiry, to do a bit of ship to ship battle using your big ship, against what is left of the Borg cube or species  8472  a la the little ships you have flown so far.

That could all be done within current technology.

not a bad idea but whats the change of a borg 8472 anf  a fed ship all hitting each other???

Lol Eufnoc, I think that's where the singularity comes in handy...somehow the three ships are in certain sectors of the galaxy, where there is some sort of interconnected conduit that transports them to the singularity....
I like the idea, this game would be Elite Force with an awesome twist, plus, this one would give you more control. ie: You could continue into the borg cube and shoot up all the borg you want, or you could stay nearby and establish an outpost...infinite choices, infinite outcomes. It would  be hard to make a walkthrough for a game like this, since every variable of the game would be dependent on just about everything else. Melikes your idea Martincrull B)

Regarding the singularity, I can imagine the cube and species 8472 caught first, and then, when a fed ship comes to investigate, a gravity pulse cascades out pulling in that ship.

could happen make one hell of a tv show a new chapter of the fed ensign fighting to save his ship crew and himself while trying to upgrade his ship and surive

One could introduce the Academy by having a flying and holodeck practice mission before the accident.

Ideally there would even be a phase on teh way to the accident with life as normal.

One thing missing from my little scenerio is alliances.  I really like the way Alpha Centuari handled allianced, with policitical, military, and philosopical issues either supporting or straining a relationship.

Maybe the answer is to have five or six races (throw in Cardassians, Romulans and Klingons, perhaps), and have the ability to negotiate alliances in exchange for technology and land exchanges, as well as mutual enemies and respect for borders, even mutual assistance packs.

I like the size of GTA:Vice City map, which could include a few more races.

I agree with those reviewers who ask that Star Trek games not invent new races, as there already seems to be plenty from which to draw!

humm yeah i can see what u mean but there has to be more races than the ones we know of

or make it so all the races ships crash on a low grav planetoid forcing each race to go out in shuttles to mine asteroids go through debrise fields possably infiltrate openents ships to aquire or sabatage there sciences.all the mean while making or breaking aliances to get your main ship off planetoid first say before one species opens there warp core to kill a mortal enemy(borg vs sp 8472 or  romulan vs klingon). if 2 or more sides formed a alliance they could cram all there survivors onto one ship making the long and perilouse journey back to alpha quadrent or back to the nearest star base if there allready. a game like that would have to have MOHAA shooting style, and similar first person controls.

I think a game like Bridge Commander with some SFC mixed in would be great.  Like adding in shuttle combat and mines, and being able to select individual weapons to fire.  That and a warp speed system that you can use anywhere(don't have to have something targeted).

For a FPS game, I'd like to see less aliens and more realistic AI.  Better weapon balancing and variation would be nice too.
