BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce/Direct "Trek XI"

J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and direct the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety and sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. (Until a title is selected, we will usually refer to the project as simply "Star Trek XI.")
Although there isn't an official Paramount press release announcing the movie, it is a confirmed project under development with a 2008 release date targeted. Word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned "M:i:III." STARTREK.COM will keep you up to date on all official statements as they are released.

The proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.

Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, are cited as being producers on "Trek XI." This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendresen and overseen by Rick Berman. The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project.

This announcement is exciting news, and we look forward to following developments on this project every step of the way!

Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is hitting back at unauthorized reports he is directing the next Star Trek movie. The Alias creator is furious the news was released prematurely and is also upset that key details regarding the storyline were incorrectly reported. He explains to Empire online, "The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation. People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumors of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate." Last week, Hollywood trade paper Variety, reported Abrams was on board and that the film would center on the early days of Captain James T. Kirk and Spock and that Philip Seymour Hoffman was in talks to play the ship's doctor. Abrams won't reveal the true storyline, but hints that it won't feature characters Captain James T. Kirk or Mr. Spock at all, but doesn't rule out bringing some of the original characters back for the new film, adding, "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that..you know, they could live again."

Abrams Pal Greg Grunberg Attests Star Trek XI To Go Back in Time

Fans of the Alias and Felicity television series should recognize actor Greg Grunberg, who has appeared in numerous onscreen venues directed or written by J.J. Abrams -- including an uncredited scene in Lost, and a cameo in Mission: Impossible 3. Grunberg also made an appearance in The Dead Zone, created by the late Michael Piller.

"Greg, who's my oldest friend since kindergarten, is someone who -- I love working with Greg. He's my good luck charm," hearts J.J. at Zap2It.

The betting odds are in favor of Grunberg gearing up to flesh out the cast of Star Trek XI, an enterprise that has already extracted his exhilaration: "I hope [J.J.] gives me a great role in that," enthuses Grunberg. "I would love it" (story).

Officially, Paramount is saying that the Daily Variety (story) jumped the gun and announced the Trek deal a bit too early, reports IESB. "Before J.J. gets on the phone, journalists are warned not to ask about Star Trek." Undaunted, our peripatetic pen-pals at IESB caught Grunberg at the 2006 Saturn Awards, where their Q&A wormholed from NBC pilot Heroes to ST:XI...

IESB: So, if [Abrams] calls and says he wants you in Star Trek...

Grunberg: I have to see... check my schedule. Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?! I'd love to be in that movie.

IESB: Here's a question: Are you a Star Trek fan, originally?

GG: I'm not a Star Trek fanatic, but I sure... I enjoy the series. I mean, you know, I enjoy the show.

IESB: So, you wouldn't object to recasting Kirk and Spock, like that rumor was saying, going around?

GG: Well, they have to -- we're going back in time. I think it's like the beginnings, it's when they were young, so they're going to have to. I just think it's interesting: J.J., you know, here he is, he took the Mission Impossible franchise and humanized it -- and I think he's going to do the same thing, you know, for Star Trek, certainly. And he's writing with Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci], I mean, they all wrote Mission together. It's going to be incredible. You know it's going to be great. I think that's what's going to reinvigorate -- you know, the Star Trek fans are gonna go see it; half of them are going to hate the fact that they're bringing them back, and half are going to love it. But, J.J.'s just going to bring in a whole new audience, you know, to it.

J.J. Abrams' Saturn Award-winning Lost - The Complete First Season DVD is on sale now in the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and Deutschland.

Another Star Trek show set in the past.  Joy.  I bet this one will make Nemesis seem awesome by comparison.  Or mabye it will be slightly better.  Either way, I sincerely doubt it'll be another First Contact.

p.s. if they use the borg I'm gonna go to the Paramount office and pis on the front door and yell obsene things at the receptionist.

I though about spitting on Gene Roddeberry's grave too, but I figured that might be a bit extreme.

wot u got against gene roddenberry?
for any action against gene, you would be condemned to die the death of a thousand papercuts. administered by several star trek enthusiasts with strap-on klingon foreheads, using paper bat'leths

They should do a Borg series.  Everything from the Borg's perpective... how they started, when Q forced them into meeting Picard and the Enterprise...

That would let us explore where they keep those other 5 transwarp hubs.     :shifty:

Heck I'll start the vote just for the entertainment here, and just because I'm curious to see what the outcome would be out of all the options.
