Title: Scary Post by: Eufnoc on November 26, 2005, 09:56:34 PM Right i was in the bath and i was getting hot, so i reached over and got a glass, filled it with water, just about to drink it and the glass exploded, not only did some go in my mouth but it all went in the bath, i had to spit the glass out into the bath and get out quick, the glass broke in to loads of pieces for no reason, nothing else that was glass broke (including an idenitcal glass that has the tbrushes in) i was bearly gripping the glass so does anyone know why a glass would do that?
Title: Scary Post by: LordsofKobol on November 26, 2005, 10:14:11 PM Temperature, you were in hot water, obviously it was on your hand, when it conducted to the glass and you filled the glass with cold water it expanded rapidly and exploded, happens to me when I forget to let hot glasses cool before washing them  glad your ok :) Just remember to let a glass cool down to room temperature before you fill it.
Title: Scary Post by: Eufnoc on November 26, 2005, 10:22:10 PM never happend in the past, i've drunk from it in the bath all the time? strange.
Title: Scary Post by: LordsofKobol on November 26, 2005, 10:23:22 PM it's possible your body temperature wasn't as high last time...anyway, that seems the most logical answer, your body conducted heat to the glass which, when filled with cold water, exploded.
Title: Scary Post by: Cpt Ryan on November 26, 2005, 11:18:08 PM that sort of reaction isn't usually that violent, usually you hear of them cracking. But exploded very rare i must say.
guess the moral of this story is... use a plastic cup lol :D Title: Scary Post by: Lt.Cdr.White on November 26, 2005, 11:27:19 PM Cold tap water gets colder when the outside temperature is lower, too.
Another reason for a greater temperature difference this time. Title: Scary Post by: LordsofKobol on November 26, 2005, 11:29:58 PM I've had a few glasses explode on me, never just crack...they always explode...
Title: Scary Post by: Cpt Ryan on November 26, 2005, 11:33:31 PM ooooook.... maybe your Gambit (x-men). lol how cool would that be :D
Title: Scary Post by: LordsofKobol on November 26, 2005, 11:59:45 PM no idea who that is, but sure :) lol I assume he/she makes things explode...

Title: Scary Post by: ewm90 on November 27, 2005, 01:53:58 AM glass is werd. you can drop a glass 3 time nuthing seems rong with it than the 4th time you tuch it and it bracks. you mite ask why this happings be cuss the glass get meny small cracks you can not see when its put under strees.
Title: Scary Post by: T-Man on November 27, 2005, 09:50:02 AM I'm going with the temprature answer. Glass does that when there is a sudden and big change. I heard a story from my perants once of them seeing a guy throwing a kettlefull of boiling water onto a frozen windsheild and that shattered instantly. I think its somthing to do with the temprature making the glass want to bend, but it can't to it shatters.
So yeah, anything other than glass and you should be fine. Title: Scary Post by: ewm90 on November 27, 2005, 02:29:48 PM what i am saying...
i am not saying the timpacher thing is rong. i am tring to exsplane why it sudanly hapined now and not befor. when glass has ben put under stress it all was gets damged evin if you dont see it. you may put glass under meny stress fule conditon withh no vishal ill efects than sudainly it shaters. Title: Scary Post by: T-Man on November 27, 2005, 05:49:19 PM I wasnt disagreeing with you Ewm, in fact i agree with you. Its wierd for it to suddenly shatter lke that, and it is likely stress played a big part in it.
Title: Scary Post by: LordsofKobol on November 27, 2005, 07:00:15 PM Fractures in the glass is a possibility however I think Euf would have mentioned that if he dropped the glass before, he would have come to that conclusion I think. However the rapid temperature change is much more common, people do it accidentally all the time...I have to say it would be very uncommon to drop glass several times on a hard surface and have it not shatter...I'm not saying it's impossible...but still much much less likely to be the cause. It's the glass transition temperature...I'm not going to explain this concept, i don't have the years required  look it up yourself if your really interested.
Title: Scary Post by: teh-plaf on November 27, 2005, 08:04:39 PM Quote have to say it would be very uncommon to drop glass several times on a hard surface and have it not shatter Ever drop glass on carpet :D Unless its those expensive just for snobs uber glass, it'll never break. Title: Scary Post by: LordsofKobol on November 27, 2005, 08:56:30 PM ..."hard surface"...as in, nothing padded, tile, lenolium, wood floors...*shakes his head* I don't know what carpets you have in your house but if they are as hard as wood floors, you got ripped off
Title: Scary Post by: Eufnoc on November 27, 2005, 11:04:12 PM lol
