- numbers, numbers telling us that 160 MB are the current dimensions for todays build of Fleet Operations v3 pre release version.

With them i'd like to announce a new sub category here on the Fleet Operations forum called Developers Diary (sorry i didn't came up with an idea for a better name :D). This category is for you. For you to see what we are doing every day in Fleet Operations Development. Yes, we put these nice articles from time to time on our main news page, but these are not to be compared to these we intend to post here. If we feel to get direct feedback by you for something we are just working on (remember we had a design vote for a vessel in a thread long time ago) or feel just like to inform you about something that isn't as important to be put on the main news page but deserves a place somewhere.
Oh, and if you don't like the name of our new category, have suggestions etc. please post them to the Site quality forum, thanks guys ;)

The shiny new installer with exactly 6828 instructions - again based on Nullsoft's Install System

Now, back to the numbers. The installer, the first thing you will see before you can play Fleet Operations. You remember you downloaded beta 2 with like 94 MB. The v3 installer will have around 160 MB. That doesn't sound much (atleast for those on broadband connections) but you have to consider, comparing the final installed directories after installation of both versions we have around 200 MB more data uncompressed in our package - not to forget we do copy about 32mb less from the armada II cd iself and providing a basic animated intro for the first time with Fleet Operations. That means we do have much more content in Fleet Operations v3 than before, much more than the difference between beta 1.x and beta 2 was.

New also is a requirement checker. It compares your system specs with the ones minimum and recommended for Fleet Operations (these two data may not be up to date with the thread discussing this issue) selecting optimal settings for your system with 6 different system preset files from low res to high res (currently named "FleetOps Marks" - more or less a temporary description ;))

(http://www.fleetops.net/gallery/gal/Development/_thb_installerhr.jpg) (http://www.fleetops.net/gallery/gal/Development/installerhr.jpg)
The more or less temporary Hardware requirements screen

The first thing you may notice after starting the Fleet Operations setup is that this time we abandoned the nice wallpaper sized backgrounds which were thought as some entertainment during the very long installation process we all know from beta 2 - "Decoding audio". Ripping out the Wallpapers doesn't only save space but also they are not needed anymore. We do not depend on a 3rd party solution taking like forever decoding some audio files but now using an in-house solution made for the Fleet Operations installer using much more faster dll calls and is based on the BASS audio system by un4seen developments making decoding now like 3-5 times faster than it was with beta 2.

"Decoding Audio" - Now as fast 'home made' solution with progress bar

I like the idea of having the minimal requirements screen, very wise.  Maybe I'm looking to deeply into this but on the first pic of the installer, those blue streaks, are they supposed to show anything or just there t look nice? :)

Post by: DOCa Cola on September 19, 2005, 07:22:43 PM
yes, just some eye candy ;). it's an opening screen replacing the 'Welcome to the Fleet Operations Setup Wizard' one from older betas.

Its approaching new year and it was rumoured to of been released early 05, this means its almost been a year longer than prediced.

However I am happy, as it will be a year better. If the game was released too early it would be buggy and terrible. Would you rather have the old version or a messed up game you can't play.

Then again it has to be said that I am sooo egarly awaiting the release. All I want for christmas is fleetops :(   I am sure it will be worth the wait

Let me see:  Peurto Rico, Guam, Midway, Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Alasaka, and the Phillipines (we gave the Philipines their independance).

Also, we havn't gotten our ***** kicked by any of OUR colonies.

And you have to consider that in less than 300 years,  the USA has become TWICE the nation "Great" Britain EVER WAS.

If those count as colonys Britian still has:

The Falkland Islands
Acension
Gibraltar
Halleys (in antartica)
Picairn Islands
South Sandwich Islands
South Georgia
Channel Islands

Does that give us more than america?   :P

You just contradicted yourself

suffice to say britain has more colonys than america, indeed america was a conlony of britain.

We lost it on the grounds that we couldn't send enough troops over the atlantic in the middle of a war with France.

Title: V3: Numbers
Post by: SHO260 on February 07, 2006, 10:53:43 PM
england did not lose the revolutary war persay so much as they relized that since they were the largest empire in the world America would have to trade with them so they would get the money they wanted from trade anyway but this way the would not have to pay the overhead costes of governing and protecting the united states so they pulled out so they could spend more of there resources elsewhere.

Title: V3: Numbers
Post by: Maniac-X on February 16, 2006, 12:59:05 AM
Uh... yeah they did.

The only way they could have possibly won was complete and total occupation, because no matter where their armies went and defeated someone, another militia popped up somewhere else. Also, the americans used better tactics: hit and run, taking cover, etc etc, instead of the british "lets all walk in a small group and take turns shooting".

Their casualty rate was much higher, they didn't win as many battles... and then toward the end, we got help from the french navy on top of that.

And then General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington on Oct 17, 1781 during the Battle of Yorktown (Oct 6 - 19). Aside from a few minor skirmishes after that, fighting stopped between the Americans and the British.

The British prime minister, Lord Frederick North, resigned after Cornwallis's surrender. The new leaders signed the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783, which officially ended the American Revolution.

The Treaty of Paris basically officiated the colonies moving to their own possession as the USA, and be officially recognized by everyone else as their own entity, and a bunch of other stuff that was pretty minor (like fishing rights and such).

But anyway... why are we talking about this stuff in the developers' diary? o.O Talk about thread derailment...
